The Peach State! GA!!!
Found a nice 6" 17-1 in local gunshop. Target trigger and hammer. Nice. Tight. Very good blue. Price is $500 before the haggling starts. The hammer is odd. On the top of the hammer is a little tab sort of thing. Roll it forward and the hammer will not hit the firing pin. Thus you can dry fire the revolver without damage to the chambers. Roll the tab back and the hammer hits the firing pin normally. I have not seen this before. A standard S&W type hollow rivet holds it in the hammer. In ever respect it looks like a factory item. What is it? Am seriously trying to figure a way to get the revolver. Tonight I will be doing some serious talking with the wife. It is a pretty thing... just ideal to go with my M-18. Any ideas, information would be very much appreciated. Sincerely. bruce.

It sounds like a model 53 hammer that is made to shoot rimfire or centerfire ammo. The M53 is a K frame so it should work in the M17. I've never heard of this being done though.

Bruce,

I'd have to agree with Bama as far as the Hammer being from a Model 53!! Never saw this done before either, but it will fit!! I doubt the original intention of installing it was to make it so you could dry-fire it,but most likely he was looking for a Target Hammer to shoot with & had this one handy!! I will say though that 17-1's aren't easy to come by,having been stamped that way for only 2-3 yrs.,so if you can pick it up for the $500 or less they are asking I'd think I'd grab it & run!! Also,I'm sure you could find one of the "Jet" Collectors here that would be more than willing to trade the "Jet" Target Hammer for a Standard K-Frame Rimfire Target Hammer if you wanted to part with it!!

Good Luck!!

From what I can tell from pictures that I have seen, the hammer is identical to the one on a M-53. I suppose that rules out the hammer being factory installed. Given that the hammer appears to be for a 53, would it present any sort of problem in using it on the 17 for .22 LR ammo? Would replacing it with a correct hammer be a tremendous problem? Would it be important? The 17 is very nice. It is probably 95% with just a tiny bit of blue wear. Mechanically it is nice and tight. Beautiful target stocks. Maybe I can get them to come off their price. As far as trading hammers is concerned, it never occurred to me that anyone would take the hammer, etc. out of a revolver. I figured you shot them the way they factory made them.

It should not be a problem because the M53 shoots 22 LR with inserts or a LR cylinder for the ones that have the extra cylinder. It's just not original and the hammer is worth more to a Jet owner who would like a target hammer for their gun. I'd try to use it as a bargaining chip to get the gun and then decide what I want to do with the hammer. MHO.

It's Saturday evening... 9:15 p.m. I'm finishing up for the Easter Sunday Sunrise Service and the two Morning Worship Services. But, I got it. And... I took it out shooting. Briefly, cleaned it thoroughly and then shot 300 rds. Did not change the sights as it was perfectly centered. First double-action group at 25 yds. was about 2.5 inches perfectly centered on the axle hole of the harrow blade. Fired 50 rds. double-action into 4" group. Then fired 50 rds. single action into less than 3 inches. Outstanding revolver. Fired the other 200 rds. at clods of dirt in the field as well as little .22 LR boxes and aluminum cans. I was making hits out to and beyond 50 yds. Now home. Wiped the revolver down and noticed that it has a screw in the front of the frame above the trigger guard. Had not noticed this. I've not before had a K-frame w/ a wide trigger and hammer. I like it for SA shooting... not so much for DA shooting. All in all, this is a simply wonderful revolver. I am very thankful to be able to have two extremely high quality .22 LR revolvers. Tomorrow afternoon after we finish two luncheons, I will have the afternoon and evening off. I will try to do some pictures. In fact, if possible I will try to pictures of all my S&W revolvers. They are plain vanilla, but they are special to me. Sincerely. bruce.

Just got back from Easter Sunrise Service. Had 46 present... then breakfast. Now, off to Church! I serve two small congregations of 38 and 46 members. Last Sunday we had 46 at the smaller Church. The larger Church averages a little over 30. Today... we are shooting for twice our membership at the smaller Church. I have no idea how many will be at the larger Church. It all depends on if folks travel to see family or if the families travel back here.

I will try to do pictures ASAP after the luncheons are concluded.

Congratulations on the purchase as you bought a great revolver and Model 17's are certainly popular up here.
