I can tell you what will happens if/when grunge gets in there, the spring loaded locking bolt on a used 6" 586 I bought, would not retract enough for me to be able to fully close the cylinder. I put a small tube on a spray can of gun cleaner and shot a bunch of it in the hole.
You wouldn't believe your eyes, seeing all of the junk that came running out that hole after multiple applications. And yes, that fixed the problem.
