Is it a hammer for the Olympic hammer throw?
I think it is a kind of dumbbell. Had a Brit for a neighbor who used to have a couple of exercise things that looked like that.

vrichard, Just a guess but to me it looks like it may be a pea from a large balance scale. The most common type of these scales is the old cotton scale with a 4# pea. The slot under the handle looks to be there for a reason and can't be sure but it looks like the top of the slot is pointed like it should fit into a grove. My Guess!!!!!

I thought it was a kettle bell (used in weight lifting, and body building), but the handle configuration and a lack of its weight being prominently stamped on it makes me doubt that I'm correct. I'd really like to know what it is.

Its name depends on which side of the country you are from.
On the left coast it's called a Pacific Left Foot Anchor.
On the right coast it's called a Atlantic Right Foot Anchor.
They can be found on the ocean floor 3+ miles from the coastline or out in International Waters.

That is what is call a whatsit. It has many uses, it weights 22 lbs. It can be used to hold the corner of a tarp down when it is windy. I have seen it used on a bull to keep it from running(you may not want to know where it was tied or be the person that did the tieing). Back in the day it was used to crack black walnuts hence the black color. and it was used to test the breaking point of toes to determine the gage of steel to use in steel toed shoes.
