What is your favorite Mountain Gun, and why?

You have to have a special gun to take to the mountains? I was not aware of that.

Think I'd feel pretty well heeled in the hills with this'n, in .45LC ;

Somewhere's North West of Hereabouts...

Never really thought about a "mountain" gun particularily. However, I sold all of my big "N's" some time ago and missed them. I can't handle the big magnums anymore, age and arthritis have taken their toll. But I really wanted a large caliber "N" again.

So, I'd been on the prowl for quite a while. Watching Gunbroker, no luck. The few that I bid on (44 special and 45 colt) went for way to much for used guns. Same thing on Auction Arms. The other day I was in one of my local gun shops and they had two mountain guns in the case. Both were 45 Colt, stainless and blued. I've always liked blued guns, and the blued one had some real nice wood stocks on it. The stainless had the ubiquitous Hogues. Well, I bought the blued.

The fact that it was a "mountain gun" didn't even factor in. I simply liked the look, the feel, the balance, and the fact that it was large caliber "N", which was what I was looking for. The trigger was "heaven".

So, I guess you could say that my favorite Mountain Gun is a 45 Colt, since that's the only one that I have.

I really enjoy shooting my 625 but the .44M just has the edge in power versatility; it will go to mild to wild in a relatively easy to carry revolver. Ammo is also widely available even at Wally World.

Do you guys notice a difference in terms of recoil in the 629 mountain gun vs the regular 629 4" half lug barrel?

I have both, but I will be honest, I kind of feel like the 45LC is a better round for the mountain gun. I had my 625-6 cylinder cut to accept 45ACP too and it feels like the most versatile revolver I own now...

My first S&W was a new 625MG in .45 Colt. I tried to wear it, an '01 vintage -7, out. When I had the opportunity to add another one - actually, a LN -6, I jumped. I'd love to have a 625MG in .45 ACP/AR - but I am a realist - the .45 Colt is my favorite. My only other MG was a 629MG - which I happily replaced with a standard production 4" 629. Too many plusses for that extra 2 oz!

I have owned 4 Mountain guns- two .44 Magnums, a .45 Colt, and a .45 ACP. I sold one .44-it had a IL, and the .45 Colt.

The .45 ACP gets the most use. There are all sorts of good ACP factory loads out there and it loads so fast with the full moon clips. It is my favorite self defense revolver.

I bought the .44 Magnum MG to replace a M24-3 that I had round butted and later had to sell. Plus, we do have a few black bears and mountain lions around here.

If you are going to use it in the Woods the 44 Mag is the best choice.

The wife and I ALWAYS carry our 44 Mag MG's in the field.

You can choose from full power 44 Mag loads to shotshells to "light specials".

You can pick your 2 legged protection ammo from 44 Special and up to 44 Mag as well.

If it was strictly for Urban Concealed Carry then a 45 ACP MG would malke perfect sense as with full mood clips re loading is fast and sure...

However, if you practice with speed loaders, you can reload a 44 mag MG pretty quick as well.

If hand loaded the .44 will do anything the others will do ...and then some. But one you didnt mention is the .357 mountain gun, it would be high on my list as well.

I've only ever owned the .45 Colt one, and I handload for it. I don't like the recoil of an N-frame .44 Magnum, so the .45colt works better for me anyway.

I was shooting my 25-13 yesterday. .45 Colt. Bought it used, lnib. Already set for reloading the cartridge was one reason for getting this gun. Shot some very light 200 gr swc over 5 gr Clays and some more aggressive 255 gr over 7.2 Universal. Didn't have the chrono along. The 255s were very manageable. I'll be packing it on my Montana hunt this fall, as well as dinking around in the Oregon woods. A nice companion for the '92 Rossi. The 4 5/8 Ruger BH is probably more period correct.

I have two mountain guns in 44 mag - one had the lock that I've had professionally removed - the other is without the lock, can't remember the dash - but recently I acquired a 629-2 MG and love it - firing pin on the hammer, factory combat grips - sent it to Rogar and it now has NP 3 full treatment. I'm going to sell on or both of the other mountain guns, as I don't need three. Also put a MG barrel on a short barreled 686 and love it.

My Mountain Gun is chambered for the grand old 45 Colt cartridge. I think the two make an excellent and sensible pair.

...because it doesn't say "Mountain Gun" on it anywhere!

I dislike all the cheesy model names that S&W puts on some of their guns,

e.g. "Tactical" "Eight Times" "Mountain Gun" "Airweight"

"Ladysmith" , etc.

But then, I also dislike all white foods. Call me crazy...!

(BTW, mashed potatoes are OFF-white, and thus edible!)
