What is your Go to War Sidearm?

Glock 17L (six-inch longslide). Why? Because I have one and it is more reliable than my pretty BHP, gets more velocity out of the 9mm ammunition, is lighter, holds more rounds (this isn't a typical CCW scenario), and finally: I can shoot it more accurately. I have a good field holster for it - secure and very fast.

Ammunition? It'll probably feed anything, but for a military-type scenario, I actually think FMJ is a better choice because of its hard object penetration capability. Either Winchester 9mm NATO (124 gr. at maybe 1200 fps out of the longer barrel), or the newer M1152 (hot 115 gr. flat-tip at about 1350(?). I've only shot the 124 gr.

Reality? I'm getting old and decrepit, so this is just a Walter Mitty imagination game!

I agree with pretty much everything except the “hard object” FMJ penetration capability. In most hard objects like wood, etc, hollow points just plug and don’t expand and give FMJ performance. On hard objects like sheet metal, it’s the velocity and energy that get the work done.

Is this the S&W Forum or is it Glock Talk?

There are so many good choices besides a GXX.

I didn't realize the Kool-Aid was so strong here.

Kinda sad, really...

I was thinking the opposite way. It took quite a few posts for a Glock to even hit the board.
I woulda thought a 17/19 would be top of the list.
It warms my heart to see the 1911 love!

I know we all like what if scenarios...

The 9mm isn't my favorite cartridge and Glock isn't my favorite handgun, but it's probably the most ubiquitous handgun cartridge combos in the US and possible in Europe. Again, I'll likely grab my G34 with 17-33 round mags.

Uh, have you actually been reading this thread...?

Honestly, in terms of sheer numbers, most folks here have said that they would carry a 1911 or Browning Hi-Power.

Also, yeah, Glocks are popular guns because they're reliable, functional, and relatively inexpensive.

Lastly, this thread isn't about critiquing what others carry, it's about what YOU would carry.

As an American and member of this forum I would face an embarrassment of riches in a "go to war" situation: it would require some time to get dressed for the event. My heart and tradition both say 1911, but my Sig P220 is a better choice than any of my 1911s (I just threw up a little). Any N frame would make me look good, M28 for steppin-out. Rationally, my CZ75 SA makes the most sense, but since we are talking about my last few seconds of existence: Swiss 1943 M29 in 7.65 Parabellum, it will confuse almost any of the opposing moppits who pick it up.

I saw a armadillo was in my front yard last night. This means war to me.

I keep this leaning against a chest in my dinning room just for this occasion. I keep it strategically placed there so it is at easy reach for front or back yard combat.

I'm the same way with groundhogs around the farm. Probably shot 20+ last year alone just on our property. I have permission from several neighboring farmers to kill them by all means possible.

TeamPB, thanks for your reply.

What are the advantages of your P220 over your 1911s?

Thanks in advance.

I own and appreciate several of each. To my mind, the only advantages the P220 would have over the 1911 are DA/SA and decocker for those who don't want to carry cocked and locked. They both are slim and a pleasure to carry. Also, since most
full-size 1911s have steel frames, the P220 is a little lighter because of the alloy frame.

It is interesting to note that only 1-2 members picked the current US military sidearm; Sig P320/M17/M18.

I would have expected it more popular as you would have the ability to pick up GI mags long before you got to the front of the fighting to get a battlefield pickup. (But I've never served in the Defense Forces so what would I know).

1911, .45 ACP. Most likely my Springfield MC Operator with an S&W M-22 with a bunch of moon clips as a back-up. The other 1911 option would be a Springfield Mil-Spec or similar Colt.

I think it's just hasn't become iconic yet. Once the P320 has been in enough movies/games, then folks will probably be more interested in it.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the SIG P320 and feel that the US Military would have been better off simply taking Beretta's offer to upgrade to the M9A3 at a discount.
But it's pretty clear that the P320 is what they wanted right from the beginning since the features they specified in the trials were identical to the P320, they were just giving other companies an opportunity to copy it or build a new gun to those specifications.

As for the concept of battlefield pickups, I already covered my thoughts on that in detail back on Page 3.

M&P40FS LEO trade in, backup a G23, these are sidearms.

All my other handguns are for CC, significantly smaller and lighter.
