I have a 6 inch 5 screw Model 29 Serial # S-1668XX in a black box, and I have a 4 inch 4 screw serial # S 1814XX in a mahogany box. My brother tells me the 4 screw was orignally sold with a black box. Is he correct? I did buy the 4 screw 40 or more years ago used in Provo Utah and cannot remember if it came with the box or I added it later.

About the time of the model marking on the gun, the box switched to the mahogany type clamshell box. I believe the blue/black box is correct only for the 1st two years, with the 56 box having a different latch than the 57 box.

Your 4-inch 44 Magnum with serial number S181XXX probably dates to 1958 or early 1959 and would have been shipped in a dark blue/black presentation case lined with satin blue cloth. I have seen 4-inch 44 Magnums (model marked) with a serial number in the low S190000s that were shipped in the dark blue/black case. The mahogany case with a clamshell interior made of Styrofoam was introduced in early 1960 and is too new for your 44 Magnum.
