What Kind of Snake ??

Not poisonous. Anything that has a long skinny tail, and does not have a diamond shaped head, is not poisonous (except for coral snakes). Pit vipers= diamond shaped head. Short, fat tails (or rattlers). You know there's only 4 poisonous snakes (in US) - Rattlers, moccosins, copperheads (diamond shaped heads) and the Coral snake. I forget the saying about Coral snakes v King snakes...red against yellow, good fellow...or is it bad fellow? Anyhow....

Red touch Black, venom lack.
Red touch yellow, kill a fellow.

This is either a Banded water snake or a Midland water snake depending on how far north and west you live in S.C. At any rate, a harmless reptile killed out of ignorance.

i'll second that!

Don't have any snakes around here - cause I own a 12 gauge.

Snakes do us lots of good, by killing rats and other small vermin. I will only kill a snake (the leg-less kind) if I need to because of it's nearness to my home, and only then if poisonous. I did have to remove (not kill) a blacksnake when it had my wife's cat pinned in a corner of the carport! It was near 9' long!

Snakes (the reptile kind) are very beneficial to the environment, tourisim and entertainment industries- especially if you live in Texas. :D

Can someone else please post the saying for determining the difference between a king snake and a coral snake? It's only been posted 20 times.

Not a copperhead or cotton mouth. It is a common brown water snake. They can be agressive as hell if tampered with. Have had a couple try and get in the boat on Jocassee. Real common on Keowee too.I think it's probably common on most of the lakes in SC, NC, GA and FLA. Probably the entire south. Definitely not poison.

I stopped killing snakes when I was about 14,learned the differences and appreciate what they do.I like rats, mice, small raccoons, feral cats less than the snakes.

In 1960/61 I worked on a suvey crew. Carla came thru and we had about 3000 acres of property line to run on the trinity river---all of it palmetto flats.
I killed 15/20 snakes a day with a 5 ft. brush hook. I did not stop to determine friend or foe---they got whacked.
A good snake is dead.
Blessings
