I have 2 14 round magazines which fit my 5903. I purchased them many years ago when the Atlanta police department changed from the model 10 revolver to the 5903. At that time, the 15 round magazines were in short supply, so I used these. What model used the 14 round magazines?

Looking at these mags, they have black plastic floor plates and black plastic followers. the mags that came with my pistol had black plastic floor plates and orange plastic followers. Maybe these are from an earlier (Gen 2?) model.

ALL of the double stack, full size 9MM auto loaders use the 14 round magazines.

Additionally, ALL of the double stack, full size 9MM auto loaders also use the 15 round magazines.

The 15 round magazine is not due to a firearm change, it is due to a change in the magazine design

I can not recall in what year the magazine was redesigned

OP, when the magazines changed from 14 to 15 rounds, the follower became orange and the bottom of the magazine was altered to accept the plastic floor plate. An additional witness hole was drilled in the magazine body.

It's possible-if your mags are actually S&W-that your mags got assembled from left over parts during the transition. If so, changing out the follower and spring will probably get you 15 round capacity. IF the mag body was actually cut for the new design floor plate. Changing the bottom of the mag body really isn't that difficult, it's merely a clearance cut in the front of the magazine.

Mag parts are available from Numrich/Gun Parts Inc.

Thanks for the information. A check on Gun Broker shows 14 round 659 mags identical to mine but with an orange follower, so I'm assuming mine are for that model, possibly a bit older than those on GB.

Since factory 5903 magazines are very difficult to find and quite expensive to buy when they can be found, I'm chewing over doing the conversion of mine, but also considering selling these and holding out for a factory 15 round if only to preserve the original 14 round mags.

My 1989 built 5906 came with three 14 round, black follower, magazines. Since then, I've found a lot of 15 round factory and Mec Gar 15 round magazines. I never though of changing the followers on my early magazines.

The earliest 3rd gens came with these. Change to the orange followers and they will accept a 15th round.

MY 5906 came with 14 round mags. I never changed them out to15 as they are a piece of history in my safe. I can buy and have bought tplenty of 15 round mags. I could never see all that fuss to get 1 extra round since all my CCWs use single stack mags with fewer than that anyway.

There's been some variations of the 14/15 round mags in the older 59XX guns. I've seen the mags come with fewer witness holes on the odd-number sides, as well as more.

I've also seen 2 distinctly different orange followers used. I don't have a handy pic at the moment, and I'm not going to go out and find a couple examples for a pic right now. Suffice to say that an early orange one had a more rounded top surface, while the later ones looked just like the black ones, with a tall sloping side (but with shorter legs).

What model 9mm........?...

..well I have this that functions quite well with 14 and 15 rounders..........

I did find one of the rounded style followers in a batch of 59xx magazines I purchased not long ago.

Nice find. Yep, that's it. I first saw it when the head armorer got some of the first 15rd mags with orange followers.

The earliest 3rd gens came with these. Change to the orange followers and they will accept a 15th round.

Yep. I have 2 black followers from a 5903 I once owned because I changed the followers to orange and they accepted 15 rounds. As for mags being expensive, don't buy factory. Meg-Gar still makes mags for 3rd gen guns and they are brand new and ultra reliable. Whenever I bought a used gun I always replace magazine springs so might as well just buy new mags rather than pay for original factory mags no longer in production.

My Model 59 (that I purchased new in 1977) came with 14 round magazines. The Model 59 had very little competition in those days (and the blocky grip fit my mitts pretty well). Of course it would be a dozen years before my agency issued autos (Beretta 92F's) but I carried that Model 59 in the car for quite awhile.

To add to the confusion ...

... or perhaps I should say, ... to avoid any potential confusion ...

I have a Model 915 with two original orange follower mags.

I couldn't remember the mag capacity on the originals. So I broke it out.

My initial look at the mag showed witness holes ordered 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. up to 14.

THEN I turned the mag over and the witness holes numbered 1, 3, 5, 7 up to 15.

I can see where this could add confusion. I was confused for a few seconds.
