I stumbled upon a 6" ppc and it doesnt cycle my plinking ammo but worked fine with sd ammo. Im going to try a reduced power spring from wolff but unsure which model to get.

I know the ppc 9 is based on the 5906, however the 6" has a much shorter recoil spring than the 5" so do i get the 3900 compact/6900 springs?

As I understood, the PPC were available in either 5 in or 6 in barrel while the standard 5906 were 4 in and the 6906 / 391x were 3.5 in.

If as I understand you have the 6 in version, I would expect it to need a longer recoil spring, not a shorter one that would fit a 3.5 in 301x or 69xx pistol and I would expect the 59xx (4 in) spring would also be too short unless the slide interface to the guide rod is substantially different.

Can you post picture of the PPC9 barrel and inside view of slide compared to a standard 4 in 5906 barrel and slide - that might help clarify what spring you want.

there's a lip in the 6" that isnt in the 5" so the rod and spring are smaller

OK - I kind of understand the lip on the slide shortens the interface. So the guide rod does not extend to the end of the slide? - that too seems odd, but hopefully someone with another example of that pistol or better PC knowledge will chime in.

But the lower slide / spring setup does not look right for a standard 4 in 5906. Guide rod and spring look to be way too long. Is that the 5 inch variant?

As to choosing a spring - I would try to match the guide rod caliber and length in the absence of more information. Somewhere I have seen comparative lengths of guide rods - might be able to search guide rod lengths on this forum or maybe someone will respond with 6906 and 5906 guide rod lengths. I would but my pistols are in a safe at another location and we are headed out of town for holidays.
Best, Ed

I'm glad to see this post . I have a Target Champion 9mm that was changed to a 6in by a famous gunsmith in Germany . I was wondering what I would use for a spring. S&W had to have a supplier to source the springs from , but then they might have just cut their own .

My older original 5" gun with the short dust cover has the same rod and spring as the later 6" gun and my 4" DPA model 5906. I ran a 10 lb spring in the 5" and 4" shooting 147gr. Went a bit lighter when shooting 105gr.

I have never shot my 6", but my wife had one and we ran a 10 lb in it. I have a later edition of the 5" model, designed like the 6" model and it is the only one with the longer spring and rod , like your photo, I would bet it's a 11 or maybe 12 lb spring. Depends on what you are shooting on it to make it function. Just design differences I guess. I dont have much experience shooting the later 5"gun, I only bought it back in the day to round out the group.
