What should a factory letter say about the target stocks on a 1977 27-2

Would it say if it shipped with a case?

Was involved in a gun shop that sold a lot of S&W revolvers around '77,'78 and '79 and that looks like a lot of the model 27, 57 and 29 we sold during that period. All came in the presentation case and had football stocks made of Goncalo Alves and target hammer and triggers like yours.

Nice looking shooter.

What is the serial number on it? Below N444xxx?

I ask because I have what I believe is a 1978 Model 57 and it had the same everything; football stocks and case, and I bought it from the son of the original owner. It is N44499x.

Letter will describe what stocks it shipped with, but won't describe packaging. Many of the premium N frames of that period did ship in or with presentation cases.

The Model 27 was upgraded in September 1975 by equipping the revolver with a target hammer, target trigger, target stocks made of Goncalo alves, and shipping it in a mahogany presentation case. A factory letter will state the stocks on your 27-2 are target stocks made of Goncalo alves. The letter will describe the other features of the gun and most likely say it was shipped in a presentation case.

Thanks!

I do not know if the case I have came with the gun

Mahogany cases are "generic" and not numbered to a particular revolver. Your case is period correct for your 27-2 and the type case it would have shipped with in 77-78.

Bushytail and Doc44 - Are you saying these guns were shipped IN the presentation case at that time? I always thought that the guns were in a separate cardboard box that came with the presentation case packed separately. I would think the shipping process could cause damage to the inside of the case if they were packed together.

Packed in the Case

Club Gun Fan is correct, at least in my experience. I bought my first S&W revolver in 1978- a brand spankin' new 4" blued Model 57. It was in the presentation case with the tools and papers.

I've got a 1980, 4" 27-2 that came to me with the same type football cutout stocks, target hammer, and trigger, in a presentation case (that needs reflocking). (N762XXX)

I've also got a 1973, 4" Model 57 (no dash) S/N 124XXX that came to me in a presentation case, but with Hogue grips. I suppose the previous owner sold the originals, or perhaps just confused them, because there was a set of smooth rosewood presentation stocks for a K-frame in the presentation case also.

I located a set of what I believe are period correct targets for it.
