What sold you on your version of the M&P 15?

My wife gave me a M&P 15 OR (the one i bought for her to give me) for Christmas

I was looking for a while and had narrowed it down between the M&P and a couple of more (Colt, Bushmaster, Sig....), when Newtown happened -- they became very scarce, i came across an OR and i scooped it up --- I feel i was lucky to get the rifle, a Nikon scope (i still have a Nikon but upgraded before i installed) and 200 rounds of ammo for $1,000.00 (i don't think you can do that now).

just ordered some offset iron sights, and "I think" i'll be done for awhile, except ammo, of course

As mentioned, it's my Sport. What I wanted to say is that you can buy a Sport for a great price these days, dress it up, put a decent optic on it, and still come out ahead dollar wise.

Dollar for dollar, it's very hard to beat a Sport.
 
I couldn't find a Colt. So, it came down to choosing between a Bushmaster, Windam or the Smith & Wesson. My cousin has a M&P 15 OR. I called him and asked him a few questions. He said the only thing he would do different it buy one with regular sites. So, I bought he M&P 15. Love it and think I made the best choice out of the rifles I had to chose from.

I've been told that Colt makes the "Gold standard" of AR-15's, but wasn't sure how opinionated it was. Wanted to politely ask how are they in comparison to the S&W models? Seems you get a lot of goodies with the Colt, for a good bit cheaper than a S&W dressed up. Is this one of those get what you pay for situations? Or is the Colt maybe a cheaper better value? Is it true the Colt's are mil spec?

if you want Magpul buy the MOE it's also mid length now, I should have waited mine is carbine length, plus MOE gets you some extra's. I like the looks of it is why I got it. I did't like the other stock or grip.

I hope you got those numbers reversed. $5 per round is NOT the going price. If, on the other hand, you got 1000 rounds for $200, I'd say you did pretty well. Hard to find anything under $0.40 per right now...

Here's hoping that someday it will be back to $.20, or I'll be reloading....
 
LOL - current administration is right. I actually wanted a Rock River Elite Operator II. They're hard to find right now. I looked at the Magpul MOE Mid and liked everything about it. Saw it at a decent price from Kettery and ordered one today. Can't wait to get it in. I don't think I've seen very many complaints about it and I'm sure it will make me happy. Check out model 811053.
 
Bought a 15R in the spring of 2009. Current regime and the lower cost of the 5.45 round were the driving forces. Have added a few others that are considered higher end and take the 5.56 round. I see no difference in all three. Very pleased with my S&W!

that was the gun, the scope and the ammo.....

yeah, $5 a round is a little steep, hope it doesn't go there..
 
I guess mine is the sport model. Never looked at one before and I was in the shop a couple months ago and they showed me one they had for $480 and it looked like a fun gun. It was allready threaded for supressor so that was a plus. I have plenty of extra stocks and grips so all I had to do was buy some FDE ladder rails to match and it torned out to be a super fun little rifle.
 
Bought mine last year and love it. I got a good deal and could afford to trick mine out.

It was the best value available at the time & a Smith & Wesson to boot. A factory built rifle backed with a lifetime warranty, at a good price HAD to be a great deal!
 
AR-15 platform

Never was a great fan of the AR-15 platform. Never liked the way the charging handle worked. Don't get me wrong, its not that I don't own a few AR-15s and AR-10s.
Dollar for dollar the AR-18 and AR180 made by Armalite is the best of the AR platforms. They are piston driven need very little maintenance or cleaning and keep going like the Ever Ready Bunny.
 
I bought the sport and what sold me was the price. And the bang for my buck. For the same price as the other just stock AR's I was able to completely customize my sport. Not to mention they have a melonite coated barrel which in my opinion is a lot better than chroming, due to chrome's inconsistency. Than as far as the forward assist, I wish all the manufactures would delete the FA. It just adds weight and in all my years of shooting, I've never once used it. And then I'm constantly cleaning my guns so a dust cover is pointless too. Even living in the desert and doing a lot of run and guns. I've never had any problems. I think it's a no brainer to get the sport. My gun shop has plenty of AR's but can't keep the m&p sports in. There's a reason for that.

The Colt comes with a M-16 bolt carrier and the bolt is HP/MP tested, The barrel is 4150 steel and it is also HP/MP tested. The Barrel is a 1/7 twist instead of a 1/9. It is suppose to shoot larger grains more accurately. Colt builds them for the military. Not knocking the M&P. I love mine and I don't think the difference will matter one bit to me or make any difference I can tell. Just wanted the Colt.
 
I got the M&P T because it had a rail so I could hang goodies off it. I also knew I was putting an Aimpoint red dot so I did not want a iron sights in the way. I wanted BUIS' that flip up and down for backup. The T had what I wanted.
 
15-Sport based solely on price. At the time, I believe I paid ~$625. Over time, I learned I got the most bang for the buck with the sport.

Of course these were the times Cabelas ran promotions where you bought any M&P 15, excluding the sport, they'd throw in the 15-22 for free. A Ruger SR1911 cost $600. Ammo was plentiful and available by the case. Gun store shelves were full, sales and promos were common, display cases were overflowing...

Ahhh Summer 2011 was such a great time.
 
I opted for 811000 model. I love the classic look with the carry handle, dust cover and fwd assist but I also like customizing mine and having all the parts. I just removed the carry handle and put a aimpoint pro on the flattop.
 
I chose the VTAC II for the trigger and mid length gas system. It helped that with my LEO discount, it wasn't much higher than the 15T.
 
I went with the origional M&P 15T, because I liked the tactical look/function. Mine has the troy fold down sights and troy quad rail.

I would sell every other firearm I own before I would sell my M&P 15T. I liked it so much I bought the M&P 15-22 as soon as it came out, though now I wish I would have waited to get the M&P 15-22 with flash hider.

The M&P 15 line of rifles is top notch. I would buy another in a heart beat.

M&P sport

I went for the sport. Great price, and Smith&Wesson name...no brainer. I put a few hundred more into it including scope via amazon.com and sportsmansguide.com. With a $650 starting price I now have an amazing weapon.
 
Took delivery today of an M&P 15 Magpul MOE Mid Spec. (811053). The following attributes drove me to make the purchase: light weight, loaded with Magpul accessories, mid length gas system, forward assist, dust cover, folding rear sight, DVD collection and the S&W / Magpul brands stamped on the receiver. Nice combo in my book. I was looking hard at a different brand but when I saw this model, made sense to me to own it. Nice rifle!
 
Bought my M&15 Sport a while back for $599.00 at the local hardware store. Dropped by to say hi to my son who had started working there behind the gun counter. He pulled it off the rack and said, take a look at this, Dad. I had always wanted an AR-15 but didn't feel I should drop a grand or more on one. I was shocked at the $599.00 price for looked to be a solid, well built rifle. I love the Sport for its barrel and accuracy. The 5R rifling and 1 in 8" progressive twist makes it accurate with bullets from 40 gr to 73 gr. (Heaviest I have tried, I shoot mostly 40's and 55's.) My Sport is so accurate, I put a Redfield Revolution 4-12X scope on it and will shoot gophers with it this summer. I have shot a lot of bolt action rifles that can't match my Sports accuracy. Typical 5 shot groups are right around MOA, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, regardless of bullet weight. Can't say enough nice things about it. It would have been a bargain at $799, so I guess it still is, IF you can find one.
 
I have the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Magpul Mid MOE. Love the look, feel and performance of it.
