Hi
Can anyone out there tell me what kind of solution I should use in my Ultra Sonic machine to clean either blued or stainless gun parts. Any info on this matter would be much appreciated.

Thanks Graydog

We used Windex with ammonia or with vinegar at work. We always called our Ultrasonic cleaner...."Hum in a Drum".....:)

I have never liked the thought of cleaning parts with the same solutions that are good for brass cleaning. You have to clean them off afterwards from the ultrasonic with a soapy solution to stop any residual oxidation with the brass. Stainless might put up with it better but with blued steel you will need to put some oil on it in a hurry. I have seen steel oxidize before my eyes. So I hope someone here can add to this and say a good parts cleaning solution.

I must have missed that paragraph..?? WHO said ANYTHING about cleaning BRASS..??

K1

K1 or plain old kerosene works for me, any residue is a lubricant/protectant. But I should add that my hands-on experience is limited to magazines. The quantity of dark gunk/silt left in the solution afterwards is very instructive.

Most ultrasonic cleaners related to firearms I see are marketed for brass cleaning. So I would avoid the solutions marketed with them is what I meant. Solvent based ultrasonic solution will deep clean to a level that will start oxidation in front of your eyes once you dry the part off. That is why some brass cleaned in an ultrasonic solution will have a rosy hue to it. Steel will do the same thing. So the brass is an example if you have ever seen it done. If you haven't then it was a poor example on my part. Now that I have over explained it, just avoid the insta-rust solvent based solutions can cause.

I use trans fluid with coleman lantern fuel and a little synthetic gear oil mixed in. My handguns come out clean and oiled, I just wipe em down.

Dawn

I use Dawn dishwashing liquid cut with water. I'm using the machine indoors and don't want the stink of petroleum based solvents. Or the fire hazard.
I just wash off the parts in hot water after and dry them with a hair dryer.
