What to do with pet rabbit?

Slow cooked on the grill is awesome. Used to be able to buy some down the road, that were bred for eating.

Used to follow my Granddad around the farm checking the box rabbit traps. He was quick to snatch them out by the ears and whooped a karate chopped to the base of the neck, before tossing them in the tow sack. I was probably 8 to 10 when he says "You want the get the next one?"

I was ready to show him how grown up I was and said "Sure!" He picked up the closed trap, reminded me to be quick about it. I got set, Granddad opened the box as I shot my hand down in the box, searching for the ears.......
When a black & white feral cat came up outta that box, grabbed second gear on the top of my head, and was GONE!

I didn't know what to do, but I was in shock, and my head was bleeding! Granddad was laughing so hard, yet trying to keep me from crying while he whipped out his hanky to wipe blood from my face!

I bet I heard that story told over & over a hundred times until he passed away maybe 20 years later.

I still remember it well, but I never opened another trap until I was about 20. Good memories now.

My ex got a dwarf rabbit and when she was home it had the run of my ex house. My son was 9 or 10 and still lived with her at that point. My son came home with a box of chocolate bars to sell door to door as a school cash generator. Bunny took a bite out each bar to the tune of about $100.00.

On a serious note, I think Rusty has the best idea. Contact your local 4H club. I'm sure they would know of a young person who would be more than willing to accept the rabbit.

Now....on a more sardonic side.....:D

This thread is giving me the giggles. It's amusing to read of the big part rabbits play in some folks' lives. To me, they're entertaining to watch, but for the table I'll go with steak or fish. Around here, we get a new crop of cotton tails every year. They soon disappear as they get smart or get eaten.

I will play with the Bunny

That would be Daisy!! She got a cat once before I could stop her; the only cat people around my house didn't know where it came from so I really didn't feel that bad. She had a smile on her face all week after that!
That dog there almost looks like my dog! She's slightly grayer and older now.

I found out one of the PGH Public Schools that they closed & sold, I used to work in that one a lot, has a 4-H branch in it, part of Penn State's extension programs. It's only ten minutes from me, depending on what roads are closed that day! I'll call or E-mail them Monday. Thanks for all the ideas & recipes!
Great idea, Rusty, I never even thought of that.
Now, if they don't want him, with his cute little pink eyes & snuggles, I'm gonna channel my mom from the beyond and get her Hasenpfeffer recipe. And, we won't have to pick out the lead BBs from the meat!

I had three big wild rabbits hanging around in my yard a while ago. I don't know where they can live in a subdivision neighborhood like I live in. Then all of a sudden the big rabbits are gone and replaced by smaller ones. One day I saw four of the smaller rabbbits under the tree where I hung the bird feeder. I think they chow down on the cracked corn that is in the bird seed I use now. I never used to get rabbits hanging around under the bird feeder until I started using that brand of seed.

i live in a rural area in southeast texas and someone has turned 1 or maybe more loose in the neighborhood.

i see a snow white one often that is wild. of course i never see the white ones when spotlighting them for the oven in the winter. i usually harvest 1 or 2 every year from my land on the backside away from the road.

i always wondered why they hang out in my back yard full of trees. i harvested 1 once that had an acorn in his mouth.

i'd been hunting rabbits for 40 years and had no idea. never get to old to learn from nature if i pay attention. krs/k ray s

My daughter got this "free" pet white rabbit where she worked Christmas of '19. Looking for ideas what to do with it. Nobody wants it. I have a couple ideas that wife doesn't like. One includes the recipe for hasenpfeffer, but he's kinda small. Another is to build a large chicken wire fenced-in area in the back yard and set up a trail cam. I'm in the city but we still have hawks, falcons, bald eagles, and coyotes. Nature film. That would require ME to buy another roll of fencing and stakes...again, no from wife. No 'shrooms came with the rabbit so I can't put it back in the 1967 album from J A. It just seems cruel keeping it in some cage. (BTW, I would not kill Snow as mentioned above. I like some animals.)
Any ideas appreciated.
My Daisy, the crazy lovable Weimaraner would love to play with Snow, but I think she may not know her own strength, even at 13 years old.
Smother it. If you don't know how, first you make a roux.....because of it's age you are gonna have to cook it long and slow

Kids had rabbits back in the 80’s when we were still on the farm, made very good pets. Foxes got the first 2 , son got really ticked off and started trapping, caught 5-6 , got ok $$ for pelts. Last one ended up being my pet since daughter went off to college in 90’s. He was cool rabbit, house broken and loved AC. He would go outside and hop around, come to back porch and thumb on floor to get in. Once in he would hop to a AC register and spread out over it, funny as all get out. Once cool he would go in his cage.

My daughters had a flop ear rabbit and I got left with it when they went to college. One day I got careless and the rabbit got and and my Black Lab caught it and it was a quick ending. 30 years later my daughters are still mad that I killed the rabbit!!
