I've been looking for a good pistol that my wife can use effectively. She has difficulty pulling back the slide; there is no problem with her firing; I am concerned that if she has a mechanism problem she would not be able to clear the weapon. We are considering a revolver 38 (bodyguard model W/laser sighting is needed. Anyone have any recommendations? Oh by the way hello to all.

Hello renosome and welcome to the Site!!

If you don't get any responses to your question here in the Intro section you might want to try another sub forum, the one best suited to your inquiry, or possibly "The Lounge."

Good luck!!

renosome, welcome from North Carolina. My wife decided on a .38 revolver - fit her hand better and was simple to operate.

Welcome to the forum.
In the first part of your post you asked about a pistol, which to me means a semi-auto. If she is not experienced with handguns I would recommend a revolver. However, if you are considering autos look at the new Rugers and Kel-Tecs. An older female client of mine recently bought a Ruger .380 and really likes it. She couldn't rack the slide on my Glocks or my Kahr but has no trouble with the Ruger. I'm not real comfortable with the .380 caliber, but it works for her.:)
I feel someone with limited experience should start with a revolver. If this is to be a home defense gun, look at the K-frame .38s or .357s. Obviously start out with the .38s, even in the .357. S&W has made millions of K-frames over the last 100 years or so. A good used M10,13,15,19,64,65,66 or 67 should be easy to find and operate. Lots of people recommend the J-frames, and for carry they're great, but if concealment is not an issue, get something a bit bigger. If possible get one the same size in .22 LR for cheap training.
Lots of options out there, you're in the right place, stick around.:D

go to the range with your wife..........rent some S&W K frames..........2", 4" barrels loaded with .38 special rounds (NO +P)....maybe american eagle lead round nose or 148 wadcutters (target loads).

let her get the feel of them or something else that she is comfortable with. let it be her choice.

Welcome from Texas renosome. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Thanks everyone for your replies and welcomes; this seems to be the most intelligent blog I have been on; gave up on all others. We are going to the range today to try out a 38 S&W bodyguard. Will also see if she can use a SD9 S&W.

Best Spouse Handgun?

Remsome,

As many say, revolvers are often much nicer and simpler for some to shoot that many not have the interest or patience for the extras involved in using a semi-auto with a slide and magazines. I know my kids and wife sometimes get unsettled by different handguns that eject shells differently (and sometimes drop a hot round inside of clothing or even glasses, etc; not a problem with a revolver. It you decide a gun with a slide and a magazine is what you really want however, you might have her try the technique once shown and used by Israel (especially taught to civilians). You can "Google" or "Bing" videos on youtube. They teach to rack the slide with a push-pull method using both hands rather than a "sling-shot" method; or using the slide release. In the videos they also show them not having a round in the pipe until drawn and racked in one motion. This method is a lot easier to do than others and requires less strength. Some who are new to hand guns may not want to carry "one in the chamber" as well.

I would definately recommend a S&W revolver.

Have her shoot a few and get the one she likes the best.

Also Crimson Trace Laser Grips are well worth the money.

Welcome from Northwest Georgia! I bought my wife a M&P 9c, whcih she loves to shoot, but she carries a 642 since it's much lighter - she shoots it well too! :)
