What was your best gun buy?

Latest one? A Like New police trade-n SW99 in 9MM for$369 w/box, papers, all back straps, front sights and (4) hi-cap mags.

You didn't get that from Ed's Pawn in Stockbridge, GA, did you?
Their sign shows SW99s for some good prices.

It was a squib that jammed between the forcing cone and cylinder. How I didn't feel or hear the difference still has me baffled [emoji15]

Back in the early eighties at our local gun show I traded a single shot 30" barreled 10ga. Shotgun for a JM stamped Marlin model 336 lever gun in 35 rem. I Still have it too. A few years later I traded for an identical gun in 30-30 .

Rhetorician Response #2

Forgive me if I have posted to this thread!

The best deal I ever got, and may never run across another again was; a Smith 360PD / Scandium / Titanium, snub nosed, 357, that weighs less than 12 oz.

I got it for $355 and it was a few cents less than $400 "out the door" from my local pawn emporium. They did know what they had, they were just making room to become a full fledged gun store and wanted to move older inventory.

Once in a lifetime gun for sure!!

My thoughts?

Yours? :D

Would a Ruger, Security Six, 357, Stainless Steel, with a 4" barrel from an estate sale for $325 count.

By the by, it is pristine without a box and papers.

My thoughts. :D

I just picked up a SW40VE like new! Came with 4- 14 round mags, 2 of them have not been used. A soft Tagua IWB holster, the original box and 50 rounds of 180gr ammo. All had for 2 bills!! Great shooter too!

Dan Wesson

Dan Wesson Model 15-2 .357 Pistol Pac.
Complete, "Unfired", Manilla envelopes never opened. Serial # was the original buyers initials.
Payed $450 for it. Sold on Gunbroker for $1275. What an idiot I was for selling that.

About 18 months ago now I picked up my M41 from a local dealer near my home who thought the gun did not work correctly. I took one look at it and recognized what it was and offered $650.00 for it. Its a 1958 year model with the brake but NO box. Hardly any scratchs on it and it fires extremely well. I did a spring set in it and a new extractor and have been shooting it ever since. With the value over $2000. now for this vintage of gun I think I have done alright on it.

A 1984 Marlin 1894M , 22magnum, for $165.00. Bough it in 2009. Said it jammed all the time. I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning and didn't baby it when I worked the lever. Great shooting rifle

Not a Smith, but a Colt 1911A1. I purchased this through the NRA in 1960. It was sold as "unserviceable" Government surplus from Aniston Army Depot, Alabama. In fact, it was complete and in perfect condition, manufactured in 1942. The price was $17 plus $2 shipping. By comparison, a commercial .45 went for $65. at the time. An M1 carbine was also available for $19. We won't see those days again. Of course, I put a lot more $$$ into accurizing the pistol, but it has served me well over the years.

My best gun buy? The last one . . .

A Ducks Unlimited raffle ticket that brought me home a 12 GA Winchester DU Camo Speed Pump. Gave it to my Dad, but he gave it back.

While technically not a buy...

I hauled an ac unit, washer, and dryer for a guy who was moving...he didn't have any money but he insisted I take an old bolt rifle.

Turned out to be an old model 1891 7.65 Arg. Mauser I believe....

Got some ammo for it. And my mother had killed I think 14 deer in the last 10 years with it

Local shop had several KBI re-imported 6904's and I was looking for a carry 9 mm 3rd gen subcompact. Out of the 3 they had the one that"felt" the best was the ugly duckling with the most holster wear. Couldn't put my finger on it but some thing about it caught my attention. Being the ugliest it was also the cheapest and I cut a deal at $275 OTD as long as I could drop the slide and take a look inside. When I did no hint of wear at all even on the black finish on the frame rails!! Gun had been in and out of the holster a LOT but almost never shot!!
1500 rounds now through it and not one single fault of any kind + it's the most constant and best grouping pistol I own. That includes the Performance Center Shorty .40 I also own, my 1066 and my pristine high polish Blue adjustable sight MKIII Browning High Power.
Best gun buy I have ever made by a mile that is now my # 1 carry pistol and a definite keeper!

Two Ruger Red Label O/U 12 ga shotguns for $800 (Estate Sale).

Taurus 4" blued .357 magnum for $100

Ruger SP101 2 1/4" .38 spl for $150

Ruger Security Six 6" .357 mag $250

East German Makarov in pristine condition; traded for some older fly tying materials (worth @ $75). Sold it to a collector for $350.

Colt Single Action .22 Sesquicentennial Arkansas Edition LNIB appeared to be unfired in the collectors wood box at a LGS for $150 several years back. Box was missing medallion on cover. Sold it for $400 a year later.

For the past fifty plus years, I have bought and sold or traded lots of guns. Some I bought way too cheap, and others I may have paid a bit too much.

One nice deal. A friend of a friend had an inherited Model 12 Winchester, barely used in a beat up original box. Local dealer offered $150, guy wanted $250. I was happy to oblige him. A few hours later, I sold it to a collector for $950.

I sometimes appraise neat stuff for a pawn shop. They wholesale their guns. I have made some outstanding buys there. $140 for a scruffy 60 that cleaned up nicely, $200 for a minty nickel air weight Chief, $112.95 for a very nice Glenfield 30, recently a C series, exceptionally nice M&P snub for $140, and a really nice model Remington 511 .22 bolt gun for $40. All of these were already priced for dealers when I went by to look at something else for them. I still have all of these. Dealers can have all the plastic stuff.

The one that comes to mind first is a Marlin 1894 lever action rifle in .357 Magnum, bought it a few years ago for $150. The only marks on it are the ones I put on it carrying it around through the woods. It's one of the pre-safety models, actually a first year gun for the .357, a 1979. They have been bringing pretty good money since the Marlin/Remington deal a few years ago,........... but mine's not for sale. It's way too much fun to shoot!
