What was your first Smith and Wesson??

My first Smith & Wesson was actually a pair.

In November 2001 I bought a set of new in box, old stock, consecutive serial numbered 629-1, the 8 3/8" in my avatar and it's companion with a 6" barrel. I had been looking at this pair for a couple of years every time I went to the gun shows, I actually only wanted the 8 3/8" but the seller would not break up the pair so I ended up buying both for $950.

I rarely shoot the 6" but have put thousands of rounds through the 8 3/8" gun. One of them has March 19 1984 ink stamped on the inside of the stocks. l own both of them to this day and still have the boxes, paperwork and tools.

My first was a 4 inch Model 28 Highway Patrolman. I bought it new from The Grant Boys at their Anaheim store in 1973. I paid $125.00 for it. I stupidly sold it to fund a 4 inch Model 19 three years later, wanting a lighter gun to carry on duty when I was working security while going to college. Like most here, I went on to buy many more Smiths, but I wish I would have kept that first one.

Model 28, 1972. Still have it. First time out, the gun consistently shot to 3 o'clock regardless of distance. Put it on a level surface and noticed the barrel was set off at 3 degrees to the right. Return to Smith. Came back 6 months later with target proficiency. Best gun in my safe!
Thank God I have only had to send my 617 back to S&W for warranty work. It is now an amazing shooter and always goes with me to the range. I credit my 617 for teaching me how to shoot double action. I pretty much only shoot double action these days.

Model 10 HB. Sweet shooter.
I got back into shooting 4 years ago, my favorite handgun was always a model 10 closely followed by the 15. Never paid attention to nickel or stainless. When we went to the gun shop I told the young clerk I'm looking for a Smith & Wesson 38 4-in barrel 6 inch would be second choice but I said it has to be a Smith & Wesson I'm not interested in a Ruger or a Colt. Then I said basically I'm looking for an Adam 12 revolver.
The clerk smiled and said I have the deluxe version he came out with that 64-5 I was disappointed for about two seconds and the minute I held at my hands I'm like I'm taking it I didn't even look at price tag and when I saw the price tag it was actually a couple hundred dollars less than I thought it would be. I now have a square butt tapered barrel 1956 M&P. After getting my two revolvers that I've always wanted I've got into some semi-autos and some other heavier caliper ones but Smith & Wesson 38s my main go to.

A four inch Model 19 I bought used in 1982. Don't remember what dash. Just that it was pinned and recessed. A previous owner had it Nytexed. Then the guy who bought it and later sold it to me took semi chrome polish buffed out the "stainless" finish to bright nickel (the deal was consummated as a pawn shop where the seller paid the pawn ticket and then sold it to me. The gun shot fine and the inner portions of the frame and front of the cylinder that weren't polished cleaned as well as any finish I've ever worked with since. Anyway, I was young, dumb, and ended up trading it and some cash for a Colt Diamondback. I still have the target grips. They were pretty scratched up so I cut them down and refinished them more along the lines of the Coke Bottles. They are on my 66-1 today.

1971 a 4" M-28 that I traded a Colt .357 for. The Colt had the floating firing pin and it had, apparently snapped off during a qualifying round. The next month I heard the dreaded "CLICK" when I started the qual round. I had carried a paperweight for a month on duty. Following that:
a 6" M19
a 4" M66
a 2 1/2" M66
a M645
three different 3" HB M36s
a 6" M53
All three barrel length M57s (I like the .41 Mag)
A 8 3/8" M29
A 6" M66
A 2 1/2" M19
A 3" M66
A M41 with both barrels (not the muzzle brake though)
