What was your first Smith and Wesson??

My first Smith & Wesson was a 2.5" 686-6, which I got to replace a Detective Special as my carry gun. On a particularly hot day out and about I had sweat heavily on the Detective Special, and by the time I got home the backstrap had pitted very severely. To this day I don't know if my sweat is especially corrosive or if the Colt was just easily corroded (I've never had that problem with any other blued gun, also it was one of the 90s Colts), but I decided I wanted a stainless gun instead, and the fact it was in .357 Magnum also appealed to me.

I had a really hard time finding a holster that would work for me, and in the end converted a nylon belt holster for a 6" medium frame revolver into an IWB holster for the 2.5" gun which worked reasonably well.

In the end I had to sell the gun, but I've subsequently had the pleasure of acquiring an identical one, and had a nearby saddle maker make me up a custom leather holster patterned after the nylon holster I had made, but with some minor improvements. It's still my carry gun

The first was a K-22 Masterpiece (no model number); a gift from my uncle in 1961. My brother and I shot the snot out of it in our teens.

My 4F brother became the caretaker of that K-22 for many years when I went overseas. I got it from him a couple of years before he passed away. It still hides out in my safe.

When I got back from my second year in 'Nam, I bought three brand new Smiths from Monkey Wards: A 28-2 Highway Patrolman 4"; a Model 17-3 K-22 Masterpiece; and a 2" Model 64. All of them are still in the family.

A 29-3 with a 6" barrel.
I have since moved my collection to shorter barreled revolvers, but my dad still has that first 29-3.

My first was a 686-3 4" purchased at the Kaiserslautern Germany Rod & Gun Club for my 21st birthday in August 1993. Still have it ... along with it's German proof marks and many, many more S&W revolvers and pistols. My very first S&W pistol was a S&W 1006 purchased at the Kaiserslautern Rod & Gun Club a few months later. At the time that one was over $700 and easily 1/2 a month's pay for a young E-4.

Monkey Wards.... haven't heard that in years. Miss that place.. Dragnet and Adam 12 cemented in my head that I had to have a Smith and Wesson 38 Special Revolver. I play music professionally so I don't do huge calibers, but I'm at the range 3-4 times a month. I do have a 45 and 10mm but they are the brand that are huge and heavy and don't kick that bad, but my 38s 64 and Pre Model 10 get lots of range time

Mine was a 29-2 6 1/2" Dirty Harry special. I just happened to be cruising thru Montgomery Ward (back when they existed and still carried firearms) in the early 1970s and stuck my head into the gun section and they were just placing a nice shiny new 29-2 in the case. At straight retail, which was unusual at the time. I JUMPED on it. When I asked about it while filling out the paperwork the gun guy said that a lady had ordered it for her husband for a present but he decided it was too big and heavy for him and she never actually took delivery on it. It was in the case for literally less than 2 minutes. I still own it. Don't carry it any more but I used to way back in the day. I had to pull it out twice, never had to drop the hammer. Bad guys are impressed by it.

Got out of the Navy in 1977 ,bought a model
17 S&W and a Remington model 31.
Still have the 17 but let the 31 go a long time ago.
I bought my 17 in 1976, it will never be for sale or trade!

I stumbled on a 17 and a 67 at Monkey Wards back in the 70's! $169.00 and $189.00 still have both!

Thinking about my reply to this thread I surprised myself that it was relatively recent. I've been a gun guy all my life, I'm a very young 73 now. So when I started thinking back it's only been 2013, twelve years. Guess I'm a late bloomer. My first S&W was a 629-5 5".

Which I sold a couple years later. I now have a small but I think respectable collection.

My first privately owned S&W was this Model 14-6 purchased in 1996. Also in 1996, I started at the New South Wales Police Academy in 1996 and was issued this Model 10. (New South Wales is a state in Australia which has Sydney as its capital. We only have State and Federal Police in Australia. NSW Police is the largest in Australia with about 13,000 sworn officers and 8,000 civilians - around the time I first joined).

Model 28 with a 6" barrel, in 1976...don't remember the exact price but I'm pretty sure it was less than $400. I was in the Navy then stationed in Idaho Falls, ID and it was an awful lot of money at the time.

Grew up shooting my dads 10-5 4". First one I bought at age 20 when I got my NY permit was a 6" 629-2. Magnaported and wearing Hogue rubber grips. In early 2000s I sold the "obsolete " 44 mag to buy an Encore in 243 for deer hunting. Couple yrs later I realized what a dumb thing I'd done. The buyer was a friend of a friend. He sold it back to me for what he'd paid for it. He never shot it. I've killed deer, turkeys, woodchucks, and a hog with it. My son will someday be the next owner. He got dads model 10 for his 30th birthday

My first Smith & Wesson was actually a pair.

In November 2001 I bought a set of new in box, old stock, consecutive serial numbered 629-1, the 8 3/8" in my avatar and it's companion with a 6" barrel. I had been looking at this pair for a couple of years every time I went to the gun shows, I actually only wanted the 8 3/8" but the seller would not break up the pair so I ended up buying both for $950.

I rarely shoot the 6" but have put thousands of rounds through the 8 3/8" gun. One of them has March 19 1984 ink stamped on the inside of the stocks. l own both of them to this day and still have the boxes, paperwork and tools.
Very nice! My first Smith & Wesson was a model 19-2 357 Combat Magnum and my second one was a model 629, then a model 66 no dash 357 Combat Magnum

Mine was a brand new K-38 I bought right after my 21st birthday (I had other handguns I had bought back before the GCA-68 went into effect) but IIRC this was my first new center-fire.

It taught me, on the second cylinder full of factory ammo that revolvers were not as reliable as 1911s! Of course that was my fault and I didn't know you had to eject the shells with the muzzle up! The gun locked up so tight I had to beat the cylinder open with a rubber mallet (being careful not to let it swing open all the way and spring the crane!

Live and learn ;)

At any rate I traded that gun off a few years later since I didn't have a lot of money back then and I was trying to learn the business - forget what I traded it for.

I recall the second new S&W I bought - it was 1974 and was a Highway Patrolman - never shot that gun we gave it away at a pistol match we held in Winchester Ky - actually Ken Tap was in that match. It may have been his introcuction to "practical" shooting as IPSC hadn't even started yet. I forget who won that gun?

Hello:
What was your very first Smith and Wesson that you purchased?

Mine was a model 64-5 from a few years ago. I got back into shooting a few years ago.
I have several now, but the 64 was my first and favoriteView attachment 787815
My first S&W was a model 29, traded a Ruger Blackhawk 357 plus $250.00. It was new in a presentation case, late seventies. Still in the family passed it on to my son a few years back.
