I just bought a 586 6" on Saturday. It's one of those things that you don't see until you get home and really look. Big "ding" on the grip strap and another on the barrel. I can live with the one on the barrel but I'm leaning towards sending it back to fix the one on the grip strap.

Not sure what S&W is doing at the plant. They need a few lessons in craftsmanship in my opinion.

What a bummer.

If it's a new "classic", I'd return it and get my money back. Those things can't be fixed. The gun would have to be replaced. There are tons of old ones around in nice shape. Good luck.

Unacceptable. I'd be taking/sending it back where it came from if I paid new price for it.

Just my .02:
the wear on the end of that barrel combined with the wear on the front sight post might be holster wear, as in the kydex kind? Any chance the dealer was involved in the ol' "its Brand New In Box". when really it was a return or should have been listed as used?

If you paid a "used" price for it, I'd say the gun dealer and yourself made an agreement on a cosmetic "as is" condition, however if it does not function, that's a mechanical issue and can be resolved based on the fact that one assumes the product is in good working order unless otherwise stated.

If you paid a brand new (assumed unfired) price, then I'd definitely raise a stink but first at dealer, then at S/W. Did it have any tags, receipts, or box markings stating its used?

I agree. The gun may not have come from the factory looking like that. Are you planning to return it to the store? I'd be surprised if S&W will take it back because of the possibility it was "dinged" at the store or even as bucky suggests, by a previous owner. I've seen gun store clerks and customers drop or otherwise abuse a firearm. This is a little different than a canted barrel or crooked front sight which are clearly factory QAC issues. Did you buy it off the shelf or order it?

I ordered it. I paid $749 for it. the thing is both marks are blued over so i dont think it was dropped or mishandled. It wasnt used

I would contact Smith & Wesson. The one time I had to return a gun to them it was for a purely cosmetic issue - there was a tool mark on the barrel, it was a brand new gun. They fixed it, no questions asked.

I have a 586 classic. Great gun! It looks like simple dings. I seen allot of complaints from people that ordered guns off the internet. Did you get that from Buds? If it locks up, fires and everything ells just fine then I wouldn't have a problem with it. Get one of those blue touch up kits for it.
