What's a good price on a 686 4"?

I have got a 4" 586 project going and have been keeping and eye on the 4" x86s to reassure myself that I'm not going to far overboard. I have been seeing them at gun shows priced between $550 for a shooter to $750 for an ANIB, now I don't have a clue if they were selling at these listed prices, and I have not tried to make any sort of deals, that's just what I saw written on the tags.

Handled one at the Lewiston, Maine GS two weeks ago, as I have been looking for one as a gift for my brother.

The gun was listed as "Like New" (not even close) with a tag price of $575. The gun showed relatively heavy use, like an issue gun that had been carried for 10 years would show. Little scuffs all over and heavy carbon that had been incompletely scrubbed on the cylinder face.

My offer would have been about $375, and no way would I have gone above $425, and probably not even that high. Just couldn't bring myself to negotiate with somebody who would misrepresent so grossly.

I would go to about $500 for a shooter in excellent shape (i.e; some holster wear and clean.).

Hope this helps.

I bought a 686-2 4 inch with Pachmyers for $470 out the door. I would say $500 would be a fair price.

Howard

Thanks all.

I already have one and was thinking about rescuing another. I think I am going to pass on this one,as I do not want to hear about it from SWMBO.

At the last gun show I was at used ones had price tags of $550 to $575.

I bought one a year ago for $325.00 out the door, which was $285.00 before brady and tax.

i saw one (a really really nice one) on gunbroker last night with no box or anything, that was bid up to over $800!!!!!!!! original target grips though.....

at any rate there must be 2 guys who really want it....or they just hit the "peace-pipe" a few times too many

I see way more 6" 686's around here than 4"s, the standard rate for those is in the $550 ballpark. I bought my 4" brand new in '85 (a -1) for the whoping total of $260 tax included. Still own it with original box, pprwrk, etc and wouldn't even think about selling it.
The 4" model, to me is near every bit as accurate as the 6" and just feels nicer in the hand, plus it just looks 'business-like'.

Have seen them around here for between 550 and 750. I have a 4 inch I bought new (686-5), one of my favorite guns. 4 inch just makes for quick targeting and easy carry, a bit large for conceled carry, but perfect for hiking ect. Mine is very accurate, and others I know who have them love them.
