According to Smith & Wesson historian Roy Jinks, this particular Model 50, .38 Chief Special Target, caliber .38 special, serial number 935J57 was shipped from the factory on June 29, 1973 and delivered to B. E. Hodgdon Inc., Shawnee Mission, KS. I would rate this gun at a conservative 98% only because of several very tiny areas on the right side of the frame just below the hammer, front of cylinder, and on right side of the barrel, where the blue has a spot about the size of a pencial point.

I have the jinks letters and B. E . Hodgdon is the powder company.

Model 50

Cool gun and providence. I am not aware of Hogdon ever being in the business of selling guns, but someone from Kansas may set me straight. You might contact them and see why they had the gun which would add to your trail. As it is I would think in the $500-$600 range and posibly more.

From the Hogdon website:

In 1952 Bruce resigned from the Gas Service Company and B. E. Hodgdon, Incorporated, was officially underway. J.B. and Bob entered the business full time after graduating from college in 1959 and 1961. After considerable expansion in the 1960s, it became apparent that splitting the wholesale firearm business from the nationwide powder business would save confusion among customers and facilitate bookkeeping. Hodgdon Powder Company came into being in 1966 as a result. Eventually, the wholesale firearms company was sold in 1984.

The 3rd edition of the SCofS&Ws places a NIB 50 value at $850, and that edition is 2 years old. Also, I saw recently on a private auction (someone provided the link here a couple weeks ago), a model 50 was "at" $2000 and had not closed yet. Food for thought.

Standard model 36s with non adjustable sights are bringing that amount (500-600)!!

the model 50 that was in greg martin auctions sold monday for 2,500 after auctions fees it was over 2,900 they was paying

Wow! I'd think in that shape with that kind of provenance you could easily get over two grand for that setup.

That $2,000 bid was thought by many to be an error and that the bidder actually meant to put in a starting bid of $200. Since the gun went for over that figure, it was obviously not a mistake. The price paid however, was a mistake in my opinion. There is no rhyme or reason that a model 50 should go for close to $3,000 unless it was once owned by Wyatt Earp. Perhaps the bidder new something that we don't or perhaps he just won Megabucks and price is no object to getting what he wants. That model NIB is worth $850 to $1,000 depending on where in the country you are buying. IMHO
