What's going on with 3rd Gen magazines?

Meanwhile, I see that 1006 magazines and 4013/4053 magazines continue to bring insanely high prices on that big auction website that we can't name. Mama Mia!!! :(

In the past few months I've seen all metal 645 mags sell for $60 and up on that same website.
But you can pick up 4506 mags for half that on the same site. Not sure why all metal mags are bringing a premium.[emoji848]

I EDC the MG 17rd mags in my 6906.
But I would say the MG 20rd mags are "SWEEEEEEET".

You can't leave the range without a smile on your face after running 7 - 20 rounders through a 5906.[emoji3]

So you're going to be 'guesting" on "The Walking Dead" next week.........

:D

TTSH....LOL my my magazine and ammo "stashes" have "stashes" of their own at the Cabin in case TSHTF or TEOTWAWKI........don't want to end up like Rick with no speedloaders or Glenn with only one mag for his .45

Since I have never once watched the "Walking Dead", I'll have to take your word on the critical importance of sufficient speedloaders and magazines in a post-Apocalyptic world! :p

I'm just looking to beat what I see as a permanent shortage situation coming on for original S&W 3rd Gen magazines. :( I knew I was in trouble a while back when I couldn't get any CS45 magazines that actually worked. I've finally gotten my hands on three good ones in advance of my actual someday purchase of a CS45. :D Same with 1006 magazines. I've now got three brand new ones and I'm holding onto them for dear life in the someday long-shot hope of being able to find and purchase a Model 1006 in this crazy moonbat state. :D

But I now find myself with seven 3rd Gens that use 3913/3953/908 magazines... and too many of them were bought with just one or two magazines. :( That's not a very smart situation with original S&W magazines slowly but surely disappearing.

You've got to watch "The Walking Dead" at least for the gun of the week...... most survivors change guns more often than I change my underwear......accept for Rick and his 6" Nickle Python....................I'm guessing because they only have one magazine for each gun!!!!!

It's a documented fact that magazine shortages are caused by folks who buy magazines for guns they don't have.............leaving no magazines for those folks who actually have a gun that mag will work in!!!!!!

So somewhere out there there is a guy with a dozen 39xx mags.... hoping one day to be able to buy a 3913NL...... and.......

He would love to carry his CS45 but only has one magazine; and is a firm believer that one should always carry a spare mag when concealed carrying.... and have at least one spare at home..... twos better!!!!!!

:D

Okay for you wise guy! :D I see what you did there! :p

ROFLMAO........
Wait, I have done that.[emoji37]

Let's hope you are right. :o But if a second-rate magazine manufacturing company moves in first... will a first-rate company follow? I'm guessing not. :(

It tends to be a game of One-Ups-man-ship until someone gets it right.

Example...
Marlin 70/70P/70PSS/795/989/989M2/995 and 5-10 others...
same damn rifle, just with different stocks/sights...
Back in the Pre-Clinton Assault Weapons Ban days,
Ramline made a 15-rd mag for 'em. Killed by the '94 ban.

Anyway...Shooter's Ridge came out with a Green Follower mag
as soon as the ban sunsetted...
it sucked, the gamut of problems it had...you name it, it had it.

Champion followed with a Grey Follower mag, but learned from the SR issues...
their issue was wrong glue to hold the two parts of the mag together...
remedied with Plastic Weld by the End User...wheeeee....

Finally, Promag watched those two, then went with a much better design...
their 25 round mags have Zero issues that I've run across so far...
After that, since Promag got it Right, nobody else is making 'em.
Promag has plans for a couple of Drums for those rifles,
but haven't hit market yet.

Depending on who is First to Market for S&W 3rd Gen mags,
will set the pace of the Race.
how good they are sets up the competition to outdo the previous host.

You guys know I'm not one to cause trouble , but while some of you have been carrying on how hard it is to find 3913 magazines, I bought one from a forum member.

$30.00 including shipping with a flat butt plate.

Really some of you need to step up your magazine hunting game. :D

Ha!!! :D Like you really needed just one more!!! :p :D ;) That's funny!!! :D You have more than anybody I know!!! :p

I saw that listing but the open-ended shipping add-on was a non-starter for me. Been there, done that in the past and got badly burnt. Looks like you successfully addressed that little glitch. :)

I scored one yesterday (as previously noted) and have more in my sights today and tomorrow, partly thanks to another forum member's helpful tip. :)

BTW, my search yesterday only led to one magazine, but I discovered a very low profile shop that could be a real S&W collectibles treasure trove in the future. Stay tuned on that interesting find. :)

Interesting story... thank you! :) So maybe there's hope for the future after all. :) Sure would be nice to find reliable third-party 3rd Gen magazines for $25 or less for all the models and not just the 5900 series. :D

There's a big part of the problem right there. :o Everyone these days seems to want a 4013 or a 4053 to convert to 10mm... and, no surprise, they want plenty of magazines to go with them. :(

It's probably what's helped drive the price up so high... even higher than for the full-size 10mm magazines themselves.
Well, I just saw a first on that big auction site that we can't name... ... a used flat baseplate 4013/4053 magazine being offered "Buy It Now" for $99.99 plus $2.99 shipping!   And I thought I had overpaid.

This isn't the result of an out-of-control bidding war. This is the seller's flat price.

It will be interesting to see if anyone buys it. I think that's outrageous but maybe not. I guess we'll see.

++++++++

ETA: I just saw a new record price for a Model 1006 magazine: $150.00+Shipping ("Buy It Now").

If this keeps up, I'm going to switch from buyer to seller! ;)

A few months ago there were 4 or 5 1006 mags sold for 170-175 on an auction site.
It's just crazy! I must have missed that one. I thought $150 for one magazine was a new record. :(

I was buying them up for ~$30 last year at this time when the prices started going up. I paid $40 for a few before, almost overnight, the prices shot through the roof. I have a pretty good supply of ten or so plus these new in the wrapper. I wish I knew what caused it; was it real or panic?

Man, I hope you've got those things heavily insured! :D

I went searching again today for more 3913/3953/908 stainless steel magazines. No luck at all on them... but I did find some black S&W 3914/3954/908 magazines. Not ProMags but real S&W magazines. Price was not cheap (they were on consignment at an expensive shop) so I passed... at least for now. :o

Final day of magazine shopping tomorrow! :D But I'm feeling lucky based on a forum member's tip! ;) Stay tuned! :D

Sure economics are a factor......

But whoever actually makes the OEM mags for S&W has the dies, templates and whatever tools that are needed to make them. Maybe they are selling new stuff like gangbusters, but a short run of scarce mags would go a long way for customers and would surely be snapped up and profitable at today's prices.

One dealer I hit today... certainly not a personal favorite of mine... absolutely insisted that S&W is still doing small runs of 3rd Gen magazines every year. While I don't think it is widespread, it could explain the occasional appearance of CS45 and 4516/457 magazines in new style packaging from time to time. And those aren't the only ones.

Is S&W actually manufacturing or contracting them as he said? Or is S&W just releasing new old stock? I have no idea. :o

One thing is for sure: I haven't seen any 10mm magazines in new style packaging and the same goes for 4013/4053 magazines as well.

3913/3953/908 magazines? I'd have to say that the verdict is still out on them. :o

This wouldn't surprise me. From time to time magazine components show up at Brownells or Midway. Along with other small parts.

Smith might be commissioning sub contractors to keep a trickle of parts going.

We can only hope.
