Paracord, maglite, lighter, knife, some first aid supplies, compass, map, mylar blanket, batteries, cotton balls, duct tape, fishing line.

It's a personal thing, but I like to get ideas from other people as to what you carry in your outdoors emergency kits. Above is what I generally carry in mine. most of it is obvious as it's purpose, except the fishing line. I fish a lot, so I generally have some on a reel close by. It almost as handy as duct tape.

My kit varies a little bit depending on who I'm with and what we are doing. When I camp, I add aluminum foil.

$50 in singles, a small caliber pistol, and a Benchmade automatic . . .

(Seriously, though, I've got maybe a half dozen different go bags, and they would have most of what people would consider to be survival type stuff. Varies a little by bag, and I have most everything you'd need in the Jeep. Anything that people mention in this thread is in at least one of my bags, some of it in all of them, and the rest in the Jeep . . . )

The kit that is always in my truck consists of a small canvas rucksack packed with first aid kit, two-liter bottle of water, emergency food (i.e. jerky, energy bars, dried fruit, etc.), WWII mess kit, nylon tarp, 50 feet of rope, flashlight, matches, ferro rod, lighter, road flares, TP, compass, whistle, note pad and pencil, a roll of quarters and a roll of dimes, knife, diamond sharpening steel, water purifying bottle, and probably a few other things which I can't remember at the moment.

I also have an old wooden ammo box there on the floor of the backseat of the pickup containing a few cans of chili, beef stew, spaghetti, canned fruit, etc., along with a skillet, coffee pot, utensils, can opener, and camp axe.

Oh, almost forgot...I have two heavy Pendleton wool blankets folded up on the back seat. Never know when you might need 'em.

Of course, out here, I'm really not too worried about a Zombie Apocalypse. I'm more likely to find myself stranded up the canyon for a night or just on some jaunt up in the hills and need to whip up a quick hot lunch to feed a couple of hungry grandkids.

Also, I usually pack a truck gun of some sort in case I need to knock down the occasional coyote. Naturally, I never leave it in the vehicle overnight, but it's always there when I'm out and about. Usually some type of lightweight rifle like my Rossi '92 Trapper in .45 Colt or occasionally my Ruger 10/22.

At one time I carried a pretty extensive kit in my truck (pre cell phone), mainly winter time stuff. Now that I'm retired and don't travel very far it's mostly just what I have on my person, Shield 9, SOG flash II, flashlight, some cash and cell phone.

About the only time I'm prepared for most anything is when I'm out riding my ATV including extra gas and a chainsaw.

All of this "stuff" is inside the trunk on the back of my ATV. From door shims for kindling to first aid kits and emergency tourniquets I can't think of much that I don't have.

I carry seasonal emergency items in my pickup.

E-KIT

A vintage WWll or Korea metal canteen with nesting cup & canvas case with pocket. Enables you to carry/boil water. Water purification tabs, multi tool with a saw/file/knife, Duck decoy cord vs para cord takes up much less space, cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, match safe with whistle/hurricane matches/compass/sewing needle/fish hooks, wire for snares, small bic lighter, mono fishing line, space blanket, insect repellant. All but the multitool can fit in the canteen under/around the cup, or in the pocket. Important needed meds + Benadryl & pain killers in a small bottle in a pocket.

Both of us here have one and both similar. Each of us keep: at least one good flashlight, small inexpensive first aid kit and also have neosporin with the the pain relief, one of the large state road atlas, notebook and a pen, 6 pack of bottled water, tire inflator, battery pack/jump starter, duct tape, decent sized bath towel and hand towel, Leatherman multi tool, tire gauge which is a round one with a watch like dial much easier to read than the tube type, firestarter, both AA and AAA batteries, scissors, parachord. We both keep a pistol in the car console, easier to reach there and get than to fumble around for so extra ammunition. Mine fits into a 3 x 2 x 1 foot plastic tub.

When the weather gets chillier here also in the car and not the trunk: raincoat/rain jacket, throw blanket and a light weight fleece jacket like some companies hand out to employees as gifts at times, wool gloves and hat. We typically do not get extremely cold weather and even then we are both apt to already be wearing a jacket or coat.
