What's the deal with new strain screws?

I installed a new "domed" strain screw in my 15-7, and the trigger pull became very tough and the return sluggish.

I noticed that even in new Smiths, the strain screw is flat on the end.

Do these need to be "fitted" or filed flat? I don't get why they dome the tips only to file them flat at the factory. I don't think the pressure of the mainspring can flatten them that quickly.

I also pulled the stainless strain screw out of my 64-7 and it was mushroomed, do they do this to a certain point and then stop?

Depending on WHERE you bought the Strain Screws from will determine their exact dimensions. I too have noticed that different sources make them (or buy them) to different specifications. The last time I got a batch in, I sent them right back as they were NOT the OEM Factory specifications. Caution and attention to detail are the words when looking for parts.

At the angle the strain screw contacts the mainspring 'flat' vs 'rounded' likely won't make a difference. The pressure it applies does make the final determining factor and there does seem to be variances in length between revolvers of mine.

The other day when I spoke to the folks at Wolff Springs they told me the are going to be offering strain screws too, I would imagine them to be of good quality so I may get a few from them, they may be a little longer to allow 'tunability' with their springs.

I believe they are domed so they can be shortened without damaging the threads.
