What's The Largest, Most Powerful Gun You've Ever Fired - Smallarm-wise?

Not the biggest by any standards for most, but biggest for me.

Rifle - Remington 30.06
Shotgun - Remington 12 gauge
Handgun - My .40 Shield (don't laugh, I'm a newbie)
Other - Replica Hawken .50 caliber black powder muzzle loader

What's your definition of a "small arm"? Single operator or crew served? Man-portable?

I suppose for me, it would be either a Mark 19 grenade launcher, or a MG 42. The Mark 19 definitely has the largest bore of any gun I've fired (40mm), and the rounds have a 5 meter kill radius, so I suppose it's also the most lethal per round fired. The MG 42, however, is totally awesome just in the amount of ammo it can go through and how much lead it can throw downrange.

I shoot .45-70 ammo with 500 gr. bullets and the powder load is for a .45-70 rifle in my Magnum Research .45-70 revolver. The kick is substantial and the fire ball is about 5-6 ft. in front of the muzzle.

Feel like the 97 pound weakling here. Fired a friend's S&W 500. It was a hand full, but not as ill-mannered as I thought it would be. Rifle? Like Oldiron mentioned, my Marlin 1895 in 45-70 was the single most miserable rifle I ever fired. Every round was like a Mike Tyson haymaker into my shoulder. I had a Limbsaver grind to fit recoil pad installed and it made a world of difference. The Marlin still kicks like a mule, but it doesn't hurt any more.

Family friend had a 20mm Lahti when I was a kid. Shot that quite a bit, back when ammo was available and cheap. Got to be careful how you get a hold of one, they'll mangle a hand if you aren't paying attention.

In non-military stuff, I've shot quite a few African cartridges. They're not as bad as I expected, it seems the bigger the bore, the more of a push and less of a sharp kick. My .300 Weatherby is worse than my .458 Win Mag. I haven't shot anything in the 416 caliber, but I could see that as the meeting point between the violent sharpness and the big push making it truly unpleasant.

I'm more recoil sensitive when it comes to handguns. I had a .500 S&W, and just hated it. A stout .44 mag is enough for me.

First 45/70 I had was a Marlin 1895. HURT - my lord it hurt. And I had two more 45/70s on order - a Sharps Business Rifle and a Sharps Cavalry Carbine. Amazingly, those two didn't hurt.

I now have, along with those two, a Trapdoor carbine, a full-size Rolling Block, a Ruger #1 and a Browning 1886 Winchester. It's a fine cartridge.

The Marlin - I sold that sucker off. Too dang painful.

In Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West, Mike Venturino (who, as anyone who's seen his picture knows, is a BIG OLD BOY) who likes to shoot large caliber rifles, says he does not like the Marlin 1895. Kicks too hard.

The worst was a .458 Winchester magnum out of a Winchester bolt gun with no sling or scope from a sitting position. It rolled me 1/2 way backwards so I completed the back roll for comic effect. My friend loved it and still talks about it.

A 10 ga. Parker wasn't too bad but the effect was lessened because I was shooting at a flying goose at the time, something to take your mind off of the recoil.

For me both times. First time, my dad took me to a machine gun shoot in San Antonio. Paid a lot for me to fire off a belt of .50 through a ma deuce. I swear my teeth rattled for a week. The other Tim e was I was able to fire off three shots from one of our .50 cal. ''Long Toms.'' My right shoulder was bruised and sore for three weeks.

AR50

On the bench is a 5.56 for comparison.

How about something that weighs 12 lbs or less so you can really enjoy the recoil

Years back a guy used to come to the range with a Sharps 50-150-500 3/4 and let me shoot it. Nice!

Another guy liked to watch me shoot his Contender in 35 Rem and 44Mag. I do not care for the grip on a Contender, they flat out hurt.

Myself, I have a Marlin GBL 45-70 which I cast a 420g bullet for and move it @ 1800fps. I've been known to enjoy watching friends shoot it. I don't mind it, but...

Also I have a Colt/Sauer in 300 Wby. It's got a bit of recoil.

Today I met a friend at the range and let him shoot my Ruger SA 480. 400g bullets at 1200fps is no small thing. :) I have been enjoying it and currently it is my favorite.
