I purchased the 3rd Edition from Amazon at least three or four years ago.

Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is correct. I don't know why anyone would buy or use the 1st or 2nd editions---unless they were interested in old books or were particularly fascinated by the escalating prices/values. The 3rd edition is the one you want. You can get it pretty much anywhere books are sold. Actually, the 4th edition is the one you want---because the 3rd edition is circa 2006----as in "old news".

Regrettably, there is no such thing as the 4th edition. It is my understanding there is little interest on the part of the publisher in investing in a 4th edition because the 3rd edition continues to sell well. I think this sort of thing may be where the phrase "Damned if you do, and damned if you don't!" came from.

I agree with the Kernel... I bought my 3rd edition @ Barnes & Noble and have tried to wear it out, but for details and newly uncovered information I stop by here. I know you asked about that specific book, but if you want to "round out" your S&W library, books written or cowritten by Roy Jinks and (earlier) by Walter Roper are well worth seeking out, and not frightfully pricey if one shops carefully for a while. You will see them mentioned also in various threads here. A hobbyist can never have too many books about his hobby! ;)

I bought another copy of the SCSW #3 from Amazon two weeks ago for $30.00, shipping was free as we made another purchase at the same time. I received it in four days. This makes an excellent gift, BTW.

I have it on my Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, the book bought in digital form through Amazon Kindle Store. I also have the Ruger book on there. I am not entirely used to the reading metaphor yet, but am committed to getting away from hard copies. Just look for "Smith & Wesson" and "Ruger Revolver".

What info does this book contain besides dates of manufacture ?

Photos, history, info about design changes, special models, box info, price ranges, auction prices of rare models. It is a wealth of information at a reasonable price.

It breaks all the firearms (revolvers, semi's, etc) down by model (in order) further breaks it down by design change & year of change; for example Model 13, model 13-1, model 13-2, model 13-3, etc. In each of these model number change something was done for example on most -2 the 4th screw was eliminated. In other examples the book will tell you the grip changed from diamond to target checkered. The book has a glossary of terms, pictures of different parts of the gun, discusses the boxes they came in. It was recommended to me by forum members & I jumped on it.
