Because it is not a true single stack the only hole that will truly show correctly is the hole of the number of rounds you have in the magazine. For instance, if you have five rounds in the magazine the corresponding hole will show a round. Holes three and four will be a little bit off. Now take one round out and notice that hole four now looks good, but hole three is still off. Take another round out and magically hole three now looks good.
The distance between the holes is less than the diameter of a full round because of the slight stagger, but since the magazine is tapered at the top the stack will actually move a whole diameter's distance with each round added or subtracted.
The only thing that is important is seeing the last hole that is covered on the inside. Holes above that are not meant to be completely covered unless that is the exact number of rounds in the magazine.
