I'm looking for a good appendix carry holster for my Shield. I would prefer not to have to wait 6+ weeks to get it. I like the concept of the kydex with the offset clip like the one in this link but I'm worried that the weight of the gun will drag the holster down due to the clip's location. So what appendix holsters do you guy's use?

I can't do appendix carry - my "cake furnace" gets in the way...other modes of carry are fine though...

I like cake.

I, too, have been looking at appendix carry. Like a lot of guys, there are a number of mental hurdles to leap before I get there, though. I've seen Rob Pincus demonstrating the Cross Breed version. By accident last week, I stumbled across the Sneaky Pete line and now lean that way. While it isn't appendix carry, they offer a custom configuration for my Shield with laser and extended mag that I find real appealing. I already wear a cell phone and a heart monitor on the belt so why not a holster pouch, too?

Define my AIWB requirements:

1. Straight drop--no cant.
2. 1 o'clock gun position.
3. Dual belt snap/straps for stability.
4. Hybrid leather/Kydex design with upper body shield.
5. Ride height as low as possible while still allowing for firing grip.

Need this for a Shield and the same specs for my FS M&P 9 RMR. Have yet to find it, but I may have a solution on its way to me for the FS tonite. Ordered unassembled components from a popular hybrid holster manufacturer and will modify and assemble to my own specs--I think. We'll see. If successful, I'll do the same for my Shield.

Take a look at Blade-Tech's Klipt appendix holster. Very thin and comfortable, and can also be worn cross-draw or behind the hip.

A single clip will probably work fine. A Shield is not much of a gun as far as weight goes and a single clip will allow it to shift some which you will probably find is a good thing to have a little movement.

This is probably not a holster design I would use for a larger piece as it does not have anything built in to the holster shape to assist with tucking/torquing the grip in to the waist a little bit which helps to reduce grip printing.

If you find the grip prints more than you like, to compensate, I'd consider getting some decent velcro with an adhesive backing. Put the loop side on the bottom of the holster next to the body and then put the hook piece of the velcro on something like sturdy foam or styrofoam shaped as a wedge then you can adjust the size and location of the wedge to assist with tucking and/or twisting the grip in to your waist a bit.

You can do this exercise as much or as little as you need until you find the proper wedge size and wedge location that works best for you and your body shape.

I have a Blade Tech Nano IWB and a Dale Fricke Archangel for my large guns. Both are top quality 100% Kydex holsters. They both conceal well and are stable. They both are uncomfortable for all day wear because they concentrate too much pressure at the bottom of the holster. I have added moleskin down there, but that is only a marginal improvement.

The challenge is the large, heavy gun. The Shield is fairly easy to conceal because of its size and weight. I'm using a simple, small Galco single plastic clip positioned in the middle of the IWB leather holster for it which works OK, but it is cheap and I don't expect it perform well over time. The gun sits too low so I have a paper towel folded in the closed bottom to raise it up. Hokey.

Any design that would work for a full size gun should also work, somewhat scaled down, for the smaller gun.

I'm a fan of leather. Kydex works great for OWB, but it's stiff IWB characteristics are less desirable than a larger leather IWB contact surface, IMO. Kydex's main advantages are relative thinness and strength, open for reholstering without reinforcement. After that, it's characteristics are negative IMO.

I refitted a 100% leather IWB custom holster of mine to 0 cant and found it getting uncomfortable by the end of a day, again because of a concentrated contact point at the bottom. That is where the pressure needs to be spread, especially if applying some kind of wedge (good suggestion) to push the grip in tighter to the stomach.

I have been dealing with the discomfort and concealing fine. It's just that I believe a larger leather backer will stabilize and transfer the weight of the gun over a larger area giving greater comfort. I typically wear my EDC 14-16 hours/day.

I have been wearing concealed for over 20 years, most of it very comfortably with mid size or compact guns in Thunderwear. It's drawbacks are a somewhat slower, more restricted draw, and they wear out pretty fast with the heavier guns. Access is particularly limited when seat belted in a vehicle.

A single clip at one end of an AIWB holster doesn't make sense to me for stability or spreading the weight, even if it is a Shield. The vertical center of gravity is about 4" from the clip support point. As well, if that clip is at 1 o'clock, the gun will be at 2 o'clock, farther west than is comfortable and concealable for me.

I own other leather IWB holsters by Milt Sparks and Mitch Rosen which have always worked well, but they are for behind the hip and with cant. In a trade I got a nice M&P FS RMR Kydex holster--with a 15 degree cant. Can't get it to work for AIWB.

The point is I've got a fair amount of experience carrying concealed with some good gear. I believe there is a better design available, but for whatever reason no one has put it together yet commercially.

A thick single clip works really well, and as you say... allows it to float a little.

I also like the strut with the soft loop for bigger guns. Seems to allow it to float better from the bottom. I actually have this at 4 o'clock though. Big guns and appendix don't work for my body type. I need to fix that at the gym...
