What's your language, other than English?

I should have known better than to ask a serious question here.

I was referring to those outside the USA, but don't we have a couple of German immigrants here? Where's that shark-hugger from Oklahoma?

I speak 'murrica , german, french, luxembourgish and I can read dutch and spanish but not talk.

I grew up speaking four languages, was easy to learn them as kids but would not want to so it nowadays.

What I found interesting when I was in Holland a few years ago was that between English and Russian I could kinda understand Dutch or at least get the jist of the conversation.

It was like almost, kinda like English but not and I guess we share a few words in Russian. For instance...

ENGLISH: cashier. DUTCH: Kassa RUSSIAN: Kassa
ENGLISH: Button. DUTCH: Knop RUSSIAN: Knopka

It was kinda neat!

Don't know if this counts but I'm a US member, but my grandparents were from Hungary, they learned to speak ENGLISH before they came here or didn't work, So as Bruce Willis said in The Fifth Element "I speak English and bad English" with a little hillbilly thrown in.

Not saying people on this forum can't speak English just some of us not correct English, and our oversea members speak English good enough most can understand them.

I've been told that when I don't have my teeth in it SOUNDS like an entirely different language. Does that count?

I used to speak spanish well. But haven't the need in some time.

I would like to learn how to speak better Spanish, German, Latin. I am working towards my goal when I get some extra cash.

I know the forum has members that are not from the US. But I also think some members may not be from this planet, some of them know a little to much about Tin Foil Hats and how the aliens get around thier protective capabilites. Im just saying.

I'm thinkin' that our younger members need to start learning to speak Mandarin.

Other than English I have a smattering of about five languages, certainly enough to buy beer in those places. I am fluent in Billingsgate, and I'll leave those interested to look it up for themselves. ;)

Arik, you were there and I wasn't, but what I'm wondering is: once you finish talking to the cashier about his/her button, what do you talk about?

Oh, and to the OP and to avoid thread drift, my first language is Dixie.:D

Grew up in a house where Ukrainian and Polish were spoken. Actually Mom (and Grandmother) yelled at Dad in Ukrainian and Dad yelled back in Polish.

Wish I would have kept up on both languages.:(
