What's your pleasure?

This isn't working out too well! The 4" 58 has fixed sights and appears to be putting everything 2 to 2.5 inches to the right! I can either change guns or learn to hold off a little to the left? I have a 4" 657 I could use but don't care for sights in this holster. Or change to a snap holster I have. Have to think on this a bit? I really like this 58!

Go back to the Diamond Magnas before you start cryin, and shoot it, shoot it, and shoot it some more, your Mark I eyeball and brain will recalibrate as you work with it. billy

A bobcat...

A bobcat or a wild hog is about the most dangerous thing around here, except black bears have found their way here RARELY. I think coyotes are a possibility because their range has expanded so much. I'm with you on the .41 magnum. It's good for chipmunks or the biggest varmits you see around here.

220 RCBS bullet with 7.5 gr. UV Clays.

I tried another target, today, with my favorite cast bullet and Universal Clays. UV loads at about the same volume as Unique. The 220 gr. bullet seems to work better than the 215 gr. bullet I used with the other target. This is a fairly warm load but seems to be accurate. I held in the center of the black 9 ring, straight left of the bull. Seemed to work out just right. I need to chronograph it, now! These were fired off the bench and sandbags at 25 yards. It was 90° with sun and almost no wind!

In the Rockies around here, a 6" N-Frame is on my side. Usually the 28-2 with 158gr SJHP 357 mags. I don't worry about the bears because they usually just want to be left alone. But, bears aren't the only critters on the mountain.

I'd holster up the 21-4 loaded with 240 LSWC at about 1000-1100 FPS. There is nothing on two or four feet that that would not calm down permanently. I have a 21-4 that I positively adore! It is not nickle plated. I put a bit of white paint on the front sight It works extremely well at any normal distance one might figure on shooting such a revolver. It hammers steel targets hard. It will stay in the head of a man sized target at 25 yds. What more could anyone want?

Bob,
I have quite a number of "N" frames in .38 and .357! 27s, 28s, and 38/44s. Plus several "L" frames. I probably shoot them more than anything else! But I've been a big fan of the .41 Mag for several years, now!
I'm trying to figure your location? Is that Kalifornia or Kolorado?
Bruce,
I agree with everything you say about the .44 Special! I also have a 6" 24-3 and for long range I have an 8&3/8" Mod. 29. I shoot them all with a 240 gr. RCBS cast bullet. Great fun!

Hey Dick, carry the gun you shot that last target with and the same load. Actually, carry the accurate load which will give you more distance. Don't give that gun to you're grandson either. WOW, 90 degrees. Larry

Model 58...what else, look at my avatar, it's a 58 with a new set of Ahrend's Retro Combats. The perfect Packing Gun.

The 625. I like the Hogue Monogrip on it. Better grip, especially when sweaty. The 230 RNL/FMJ over a max charge of Unique will get the job done.

Hey, Larry,
I've about settled on the M-58. It'll do pretty well, I think! I'm not going to give the 58 away! I just gave a Mod.10 to another grandson who's not into shooting as much as the other one. This one's just graduated Tulane with a Master's in Finance but is having a hard time finding an appropriate job for his degree. He stayed in New Orleans and has been going to the range with a friend and using his guns. I offered him a choice between a 39-2 and the M-10. I think he made the right choice!
Percle,
My 58 has some Herrett's Shooting Stars on it. I have some Arends on another gun. I like them both!
Moxie,
I like the 625-8 almost as much as the 58!
Good shooting, All!

Since I have had three bears taken off my property this summer already, I'd opt for the .41 magnum...and I did. I often carry a 3" 657 around here (my property is next to a large tract of National Forest).

I stick to 38/357 guns in general. But, if I had the bear problem that 505 seems to have, I would jump to the 41 Magnum. Plenty of power to deal with anything short of the 50th Parallel. Would probably do well in a rifle, too (my favorite rifle is the Marlin 1894 in 357 Magnum).

I wonder if Smith could make a 41 Magnum on the L-frame? Five shot? Well, that would be OK.

This isn't working out too well!

Dick, it looks as though you may have a finger problem. I am assuming you are shooting single action. This could come from not having enough of your trigger finger on the trigger causing the tip of your finger to pull the gun to the left. Or it could be from tightening your fingers as you pull the trigger. I tell shooters that their grip should be "white knuckle tight" to maintain a consistent grip. Your groupings are OK.

Thanks, Bruce!
That target was shot off sandbags. Look at the other target further on. It was shot the same way, only holding off about two inches to the left. This gun doesn't have adjustable sights. It's off that much.

Love the 41mags....got 5 of them, can't get enough of them!
They are just versatile. But either choice u list will do for me!

Skinny,
I have five, too! An 8&3/8" 57, two 6" 57s, this 58 and a 4" 657! Excellent cartridge if you reload!

Chrony

Hey, Boys!
A nice afternoon, today! 82° in the shade on the home range! Tested several loads through the 4" Mod 58 with good results. 4.5 gr. of Bulls Eye behind a commercial cast 215 gr. semi-wad for an average velocity of 763 FPS. And then, 7.5 gr. Universal Clays behind my home cast RCBS 220 gr. semi-wad for an average velocity of 1,071 FPS. Both were fairly accurate at 25 yards, but the UV was by far the best! A little harder to handle but much more accurate than the BE load! I guess I better try both loads in my 4" 657, now! I'll report on those when I get them done. Happy shooting, All!

38 Special

I have another nominee for a woods gun. Several months ago I bought an HD from another member. It had had the cylinder replaced because of a damaged extractor, and there wasn't a replacement extractor available for that cylinder. The new cylinder (I have no idea what model the cylinder was intended for originally) and extractor work perfectly and it shoots great! The new cylinder isn't numbered so the gun can't be considered valuable. It even looks pretty good since I replaced the stocks with an old set of targets. It's a 5", but I have an old flap holster that fits it, so if I want to carry a .38 instead of one of the heavier calibers, now I can! I really like the old gun and it's another I can carry without worrying about destroying the value.
