I have been looking through the Smith and Wesson web site at their revolvers and I noticed they are using small, medium and large instead of J, K, N framed sizes. Is just that the alphabet frame sizes are too confusing?

I think it's just that J, K, L, N, and X don't mean anything to the uninitiated. They're probably just trying to make their website more easy to follow for the general public.

For those of us who are initiated we know what those letters mean and most of us can tell what frame it is just by the model number. I even find myself picking up series of numbers in everyday life and thinking about a particular model. Like when the cashier says "that will be $5.47 sir" and I think to myself yeah I'll find one some day and I hope is a 3" RB!

It only becomes really confusing when you find out that the factory
designation for STAINLESS guns was different from carbon steel models.

J frame in stainless is a E Frame

K frame in stainless is a F FRAME

The L frame in stainless is a H FRAME

and the N frame in stainless is a G frame.

Oh heck. Let's call the whole thing off.

Civils explanation is sufficient to my reasoning.
Just to simplify things to the newbie.
Small, Medium ,and Large. Simple enough.

Allen Frame

Thanks for helping to clear that up. I've been wanting a Model 27 for so long now. It's my dream gun. THE classic .357 magnum and it shoots too. It's not just a museum piece. Now I must figure out what the dash numbers mean. I'm saving spare change in a jar now. I have over 300 dollars in change so far.

I would say they did it at the same time they decided to start making stock fitting so confusing. The K and L share the same fit. The X stocks work great at reducing recoil on a 629/329 which are N frame. But wait… The X frame is the same as the K / L grip frame??? And now the Z frame is in with the K / L fit as well so stocks for sale all need to now read K / L / Z??? And the J frame also has an Airlite J frame difference??? And then you always need to worry about fit of new stocks due to frame variation???????

(head just exploded, vent over)
