I'm buying a new M&P 40c tomorrow, but the gun doesn't come with the thumb safety. I can get the gun at a really good price, so I'd like to buy it as is and add the safety myself if that's possible.

Any clue on the best place to buy the part, and how much they cost?

Thanks in advance.

There is only one choice for this: Contact Smith & Wesson to order the parts or they will be happy to install the requested parts if you ship them the pistol.

You can reach S&W at:

1-800-331-0852 (USA)
Mon-Fri 8:00AM-8:00PM Eastern Time

They are known for their customer service. They will do all that they can to satisfy your needs.

Are you sure? I've heard the exact opposite. I heard that they won't install a thumb safety because it changes the info that the ATF has on the pistol model number. Sounds dumb, I know, but I've heard it from more than one source.
When I researched doing it, at the time the way to do it was to buy parts and buy a sear housing that accepts the safety.

First, look at the left rear side of your frame. does it look like
this?

If so, according to the info I've received, you cannot retrofit a
thumb safety. If there is a small square plug near the back
of the frame, it can be done. You might talk to Apex Tactical.
Hope this helps.:)

Thanks for the replies. I just talked to S&W customer service and they said they will not add the safety for me. But he did say if it's a new M&P then it is compatible for a retrofit safety, and I can get the parts from Brownells. He said the new guns have plugs that need to be removed before the parts can be inserted.

Brownells has a diagram for the parts, and they are correct. If there is a square plug in the frame it can be done. If not, then you cant do it. Ultimately the best safety is your brain. However if you feel unsafe without a safety or are used to a 1911 or something similar, go for the safety.

m&p 40c thumb safety for sale

someone can tell who has this in stock for sale? i'm having problems finding it, any information will be really appreciate it, thanks by the way i'm looking for a new one.

You must change the sear block in order to install the manual safety parts.
Minimum amount of parts you'll need to do this:
  1. Sear Housing Block
  2. Manual Safety Lever
  3. Manual Safety Lever Detent Ball and Spring

You'll then have to dismantle your existing sear block and put all those guts in the new one, add in the safety spring and detent so that it looks like the rightmost sear in the picture below, and put the safety lever in place. Then re-assemble your gun, make sure you're careful putting in the rear pin with the added alignment of the safety lever to take into consideration. (Or have your friendly neighborhood gunsmith do all of this.)

Not true on the newer M&P's, if they have the little square plugs in the frame, a thumb safety can be installed. I have installed about 6 of them, it is not a real big deal.
One thing I might mention, the factory safety isn't very positive, it has a light feel. I personally prefer it to be more positive, so I use a round needle file and deepen the notches in the thumb safety.

I just picked up a used M&P 40c and I see it does have this little square plastic plug. So this means I CAN install a thumb safety right?

If it has the little square plug on BOTH sides of the pistol, then yes you can add the thumb safety.
As stated before, you will need three parts, the safety lever, the detent, and the spring.
