Especially in North Texas, and where you can inspect before purchase (i.e. not auction sites.) Shows, LGS, pawn shops, estate sales, online (like Armslist, Texas Gun Trader)?

There's lot's of Smiths in my area, but folks around here like their wheelguns, so they're priced high, IMO.

I've found the best deals at pawnshops. Sometimes they misidentify what they have. My favorite gun shop is always fair to me, too.

A good working/freindly relationship with a gun store owner is invaluable! Otherwise, still a few good deals on gunauctions & gunbroker, the classifieds from various forums, private individuals at gunshows, and word of mouth: coworkers, neighbors, familly and their freind/neighbors.... Sometimes you can luck into buying a whole estate.

I have never scored a great deal (price wise) at a gun show. I have picked up wonderful revolvers that I wanted or needed, but I always paid full retail. I have had better luck with online auctions, but as you intimated, you are sometimes taking a chance on actual condition. We don't have pawn shops that sell guns up in these parts, so I can't help you there. The forum classifieds are awesome also.

Far and away, my best experiences are at a few local shops that acquire exactly the types of firearms I look for. As 44wheelman correctly stated, a close relationship with the owners of these shops has made all the difference in the world. When something walks in the door of one of my regular shops, I can almost guarantee that I will get the first call about it (usually before they even put it on the floor). I have become friends with these guys and they treat me well. That doesn't mean that I always get below market pricing (I usually do!!!), but I do get the right of first refusal. That's all I can honestly ask for.

I also sometimes go just to hang out when its not too busy. I've been known to bring coffee, or a dozen donuts, or maybe even a pizza for the fellas. Treat people like your friends and they will usually return the favor.

Bud's has good prices but the problem, like every other web site, is when you add in all the junk fees you come out even or worse. LGS or pawn shops best bet or a clueless widow whose husband left behind a gun collection.

All of the above. But, I seem to have my best luck finding the more unusual guns I like at area gun auctions. We have two auction houses that have gun auctions twice a year each. I find something almost every auction. With the exception of when I bought my 25-2 I got good prices, I just wasn't going to let that 25-2 get away, so I may have bought it about a year too soon.

Mismarked guns in pawnshops have been the best deals. My LGS has been great in the past, but they are starting to bump the prices on the older Smiths they get in. I've made a couple deals that were pretty good through Armslist and the local Nickel ads as well.

I'm lucky because I get to walk into bud's and buy my firearms and I get to shoot my new purchase in their indoor range before I leave with it for free. Life is good. They also rent guns so I can rent the same model gun to see if I like it before I buy then shoot the one I buy.

Don't forget about Armslist,I have got a TON of good deals on there. Not too many Smiths but a few choice Colt's for dirt cheap.I picked up a Colt Magnum carry W/Leather Bianchi IWB holster,Gun rug,100rds 38spl for $700,about half of retail price.I also got a Colt Commando Special(Like 3rd gen Detective Special)W/Two holsters,2 sets of grips and gun rug for $350,Half price again. You have to be QUICK on Armslist as most deals are snapped up instantly. You also have to worry about haters back dooring you and offering more than the sellers asking price. But all in all its more than worth it.Plus they are face to face deals with no transfer or shipping fees and you get to see the gun in your hands before buying it.

Gun shows hands down. Usually the small shows in little towns. The old guys bring out the good old Smith & Wessons. Especially the pre model marked guns.

I find the best deals right here on our forum!! Not braggin but I must of bought over $5,000 in S&W's from our forum members and every deal has been great!!
I'll second that. We all know what we have and with rare exceptions, we all agree on what a fair price is. Those that don't get it, don't sell a gun.

Pawnshops and word of mouth. My workplace is a honey hole for guns

Have found reasonable deals in several venues in North Texas. The Dallas Arms Collectors show and Original Fort Worth Gun show are still good to visit repeatedly. The rest of the local North Texas shows are rapidly becoming knife, jerky and survivalist shows. The local pawn shops in Tarrant county are worth a visit every few weeks or months. Haven't tried the pawn shops in the other NT coounties. As others have said, look for mis-marks and back shelf dust collectors. Try LGS like Past and Blast and the Bullet Trap. Sometimes they have good deals on trade-ins. Finally, make the pilgrimage to Ray's Hardware and Jackson Armory in Dallas. Everybody ought to do it once.

Best Deals

Here is a strategy that works for me. At a gun show I walk around and check things out. Then I sit near the area where snacks and coffee is sold. Then I watch for those who are walking around with something in thier hands. I strike up a conversation-" Selling or buying today?" Most times they are selling, and I get a great deal!

Where do you guys find your best deals?

And we would tell you...why?:D

Deals

Small gun shows and auctions. I go for shooter grade guns and a lot of them have a poor finish but have hardly ever been shot. I have found some rare guns that look like a tradegy but, cleaned up to be super shooters. People scan the tables at a gun show and walk too fast and miss a lot of good stuff. My last 44HE was hidden under a bunch of stuff in plain sight cost $350. I have learned to "pay attention!" A lot of mis-ID'd stuff as well.
