What did you pay (and when) for your .38 Special M & P Model of 1905 revolver?

Is it true that you can call Smith & Wesson and they will tell you over the phone when it was shipped? I read this on the forums all the time?

I would not call then under-appreciated, just that there are too many made and on the market to become truly collectible. I collect the pre-war target versions, which are fewer but still a pretty good deal.

That being said, I paid up for a gold boxed pristine (possibly unfired) 1949 4" version with some old ammo for $790.

I originally bought my nickeled M&P that was shipped January 1923 while living in the Southwest circa 1985 for $75.00 together with a 1967 Winchester 94 Canadian Centennial for $100.00.

1988 I sold it to a friend with the agreement that I had first dibs if he was to sell it. He unexpectedly passed in late 1996. His widow/ex-wife to be (divorce in process at the time) asked another of his friends and myself to help her with selling his tools a couple of collector cars, one street rod project and several engines and parts. While going through his guns I found my old M&P and asked to buy it from her, instead she gifted it to me.

Still have it today.

From what I have seen, they don't do a good job in getting the right information on the older guns. They'll give you a date and it may or may not be correct. I would stick to the newer guns with triple alpha serials.

Look for .38 M&P's in the serial number range of 518000 to 560000. This is roughly what was shipping in 1926 based on known ship dates I have. Jack (JP@AK) may have more precise ship data since he tracks this model more closely.

Thank you Guy and to all the other members here who share their knowledge. I'm not a collector but the S&W revolvers I find fascinating. The research and discovery is half the fun and this forum is wealth of information.

I picked this one up in Oct. ‘19 at a local gun show. It shipped in Sept. 1940 according to the esteemed Dr. Jinks. I had to go back to my thread I started about it to see what I paid, but it was $433, $400+$33 because of background and transfer. I found the ivory stocks at a Lakeland show sometime in ‘23 for $150 IIRC. At the time I picked it up, I knew absolutely nothing about the early M&P’s and had a crash course about M&P history from the great members of this forum. Here’s my thread on it that has some pretty good info about M&P’s.

.38 M&P ID help please

I paid a whopping $340 for this 1911-shipped Target waaaaaaaaay back in 2023. I hide a lot of the finish wear in my pics, and the seller didn't, hence the price :D

I have two (pics included). The 4” I’ve had for about ten years. I think I got it for around $350. It dates to 1919. The 6” Target version I just brought home yesterday. It was made in 1928. I paid a whopping $440 for it.

My first right, off the forum years ago, paid 535.00 I believe which was a fair price at the time. It wore incorrect stocks at the time (fully disclosed) and I couldn’t have been happier! I’ve fired thousands of rounds through it and it’s directly responsible for my addiction to the M&P Targets.

I've been a student of the M&P for awhile.
I can't do details.
$35 to $2500 from 1972 to Present. :D
