This highly modified 38 M&P Model of 1905, 1st change was shipped to Pacific Hardware & Steel on February 27, 1907, almost exactly 10 months after the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906. PH&S was one of the few businesses to survive the fires that ravaged the Warehouse District following the earthquake. I don’t know the history of this gun beyond PH&S’s receipt of the gun, but the barrel and ejector rod has obviously been replaced. The barrel flat is stamped with the gun’s serial number, as is the rear face of the cylinder, although there are no stampings on the grip frame indicating it was sent to S&W for the work.

The most interesting feature of the gun is the carved magna stocks bearing Harry B. Jarvis’ stamp on the inside of both panels. While Mr. Jarvis was never known for stock work, I have had these examined at OGCA by collectors of engraved S&W’s and they believe the marks on them are the same mark Harry used on the grip frame of his engraved guns. The stamping in the wood is not as clear as it would be on metal but I have included photos that clearly show Harry’s mark. The right panel is inletted for the domed side plate screw and the left panel for the rebound slide pin. The use of magnas clearly dates the work as much later than the gun’s original configuration, as does the “barrel” ejector rod with the appropriate cut in the barrel flat. The last patent date on the barrel is DEC 28.14 There is significant bluing loss on the muzzle/down the barrel and ejector rod with some high edge wear commensurate with extensive use. Carry up/timing is excellent on all chambers and lock up is excellent. Trigger pull, in my opinion is great. Bore and chambers are very good to excellent. I have no idea who did the barrel swap, etc. or when but they were good at it. Factory letter included.

I have tried to include many photos of the gun and it’s features. I am offering this gun for the price of $1500...NOW $1250 insured and shipped through CONUS. The buyer has a three day, non-firing inspection period. If the gun is not as represented, the buyer may return it at his/her expense including the FFL fees on my end.

Thank you for looking, I have more photos to attach.
