Hello everyone! I'm looking for places/ ads to shop for older S&W Wheel guns in California... Anybody know of any good sources, especially in Southern California? It's next to impossible to buy any of these on Gunbroker. Com Thank you in advance for any info you can provide!

Look on Calguns.net web site. They have a for-sale section with lots of guns -- mostly autos, but also revolvers. I've bought several. The people listing guns for sale are private parties and you need to meet the seller at a gun store to do the transaction thru the FFL. If you do that, the deal is completely legit.

Martin B. Retting in Culver City has some interesting pieces from time to time, although their older handguns sometimes tend more towards military type stuff. The OC gun show also has a variety depending upon who shows up; one collector and regular attendee I know specializes in Triple Locks and always has one or two for sale, in addition to other pieces, mostly S&W. Being So-Cal, I wish you good luck, as finding specific items can be darn tricky!

Thank you so much, I appreciate your help!

Another thing to do is drop into SoCal gun shops whenever you find a new one.

There are a couple up here in NorCal (Sacramento area) that I find have a selection of old S&W revolvers on consignment.

I just drop by every month or so to see what they have, and I've bought a couple revolvers from each shop over the last three years.

It's very hit and miss what you will find, however, but there are occasional gems.

So Cal is a big area. How far are you willing/wanting to travel? There are several places in So Riverside/No San Diego County.

Sure, I'd make the drive for a nice wheel gun! Can you recommend any good gun shops?

Calguns and finding a shop that understands how to sell revolvers under the single action exemption.

Yeah, getting the guys on Gunbroker.com to do the SSE for the trip to Cali is tough. That's why I'm focusing on finding one that's already here in CA

Not the SSE. Single Action Exemption. Take the single action sear and spring off the hammer and the revolver is exempt from the roster as it is a fully functional single action revolver. Out of state sellers can ship to California this way too, but many won't.

After you DROS it and take possession, the parts can be reinstalled.

It really is just a matter of taking your time and hitting every gun store you come across for a look at what they have. I agree that Calguns.net can be a good source. I have bought a firearm from that site and had a great experience with the seller. It is also good to have cash ready to go because a good deal usually only lasts a short time. And as other posters have mentioned there are a lot of gun stores and gun ranges to see in San Diego County and Riverside County. I do like SoCal Guns in San Diego. The Shootist in Murrieta CA sometimes has some real finds on consignment. Good Luck.

Thank you for the correction! I realize now I shouldn't have referred it as SSE! Is it legal to ask out of state sellers on Gunbroker.com to do the single action change for the transfer to California? Can I get into any trouble requesting that???

You'll need to find a shop that will accept a non-roster single action from an out of area shipper. Nothing illegal. When done correctly, they'll be receiving a functional single action revolver and single actions don't need to be on the roster to be sold in California.

This isn't a "loophole". They'll be receiving a true single action revolver.

Once it's been DROS'd and you have taken your ownership after the 10 days, there is nothing illegal about converting your single action revolver into a double action. The fact that the process only requires a double action sear, a spring, and a pin is irrelevant. :)

You're seller should ship you these parts directly when they ship the revolver to your FFL.

If you're not afraid to crack the side plate on a revolver, it really is dead nuts simple.

There are a few caveats regarding the size of the pistol. 3" barrel minimum and I don't think J frames with 3" barrels are over the 7.5" OAL minimum.

There have been posts about it here on this forum and on Calguns.

You have been most helpful in this follow post, I really appreciate you taking the time to clear this up for me. There are so many things you hear at local gun shops, it's hard to believe anything could be this complicated. Thank you again!
