I need a set of Service Grips for my Outdoorsman in 22LR (pre-K22). It is a fairly early gun so it’s not a candidate for magnas. It unfortunately has some K frame magnas on it that don’t fit so well. Is there a company making a faithful reproduction of the Service Grips with the silver medallion? Is it reasonable to assume I could find some nice condition used service grips with the silver medallion?

Max, your K-22 Outdoorsman is a K-22, 1st Model. Altamont made a version of the pre-war silver medallion service grips in the S&W Heritage series. I'm not aware of any other similar repros. I don't think they are currently in production so you'll likely have to find them on eBay or other market source. You might want to put a WTB in the classifieds here.

Thanks for the clarification on it being a K-22. I heard somewhere that it was called an Outdoorsman, then K-22, and after that a 17. Is it proper to call it an Outdoorsman?

Super to know what I can call it. On the topic I posted in WTB for pre-war service stocks. I hope it works out.
They are for sale a lot. I am sure if you are patient a great original set will find you. Great gun by the way. You also might consider stag or jigged bone service grips.if you want the correct period look.

The K-22 target revolver went through 3 changes. The K-22 Outdoorsman came out in 1931. It is also known to collectors as the K-22 1st Model. The next iteration was the K-22 2nd Model AKA to collectors as the K-22/40 which came out in 1940 with click adjustable rear sights and a short-throw action...the predecessor to the K-22 Masterpiece (AKA K-22 3rd Model) which was launched in 1946.

Those bottom grips are on my K-22 Outdoorsman. They were crafted by Keith Brown with original pre war medallions and are beautiful. These are custom one of a kind grips made by the preeminent grip maker of our day. They would run you between $300 and $500 if you could find a set or convince Keith to make you a set. Here are a few more photos - with the gun.

NOTE: pre-war standard ("service") stocks are often available on eBay for between $75 and $150 depending on condition and luck of your timing. :)

Those grips and that engraved revolver are fantastic.

Using factory literature, here is how they named these revolvers. Starting in 1931, the catalogs called it a K-22 Target revolver in the listing, but a K-22 Outdoorsman in the price list. Somewhere between 17,000 and 19,000 K-22 Outdoorsman's revolvers were manufactured. This model carried on until 1939 when the pre-war K-22 Masterpiece was first released. It was carried in catalogs with that name into the 1941 catalog. Only 1,067 of the Masterpiece revolvers were made.

Collector speak was originally done by authors Roper and McHenry in 1945. The first publication that used selected engineering changes to define models. The K-22 First Model/K-22 Outdoorsman was introduced at the very end of 1930. The second generation K-22 was redesigned with a short action and a micrometer rear adjustable sight. It was named K-22 Second Model/K-22 Masterpiece. It's brief production run was interrupted by WWII in 1942. This model had either a set of silver medallion round top stocks or alternatively, a set of Magna stocks was available at no extra cost. The silver medallion round top stocks are the same as on the 32-20 and 38 Special M&P guns.

As for the stocks, there are stock-makers out there who can manufacture a perfect reproduction of the 1930s silver medallion stocks, but no factory make reproductions that match the originals. As noted above, these stocks were made from 1930 to 1942 and do come up for sale on ebay and gun auction sites. Patience usually produces a nice set. You can also post a WTB here on the Forum.

"K-22/40" is not collector speak. It was the name S&W used internally. See the pics of an original boxed specimen I once owned.
