In a previous post here, it was mentioned that early Model 66's had stainless trigger and hammers marked with an "S", if I am reading the replies correctly. Does anyone know where to find the "S", or possibly have a photo of such?

Well, I don't know about the Model 66, but I'm sitting here looking at an early Model 67 in the 5K22XX range, and both have an "S" stamped in them. On the trigger, it is on the backside of the finger curve, up high near the juncture of the trigger body where it meets the finger curve. It is right where the trigger stop would meet the trigger. The hammer is stamped "S" on the underside (not visible unless the side plate is removed. If you take the sideplate off, it is directly above the stirrup, on the flat surface. I don't have my SCSW here (it's at work, anyone have one handy?), but I'm pretty sure this is an early one. I acquired this gun in the early 70's. It is not a target hammer or trigger.

My old armorer declined to do any trigger work on it, because of what he said issues with working on stainless.

Years later, when I went to Armorer's School at Springfield, they advised that they had subsequently gone to Flash Chromed triggers/hammers.

FWIW

I have a '75 mod. 67 and a '76 mod. 66 and they both have an "s" stamped on the upper back side of the trigger (I didn't check the hammer) but an '82 65-3 doesn't have the "s" on the trigger. The 66 has a black rear sight.

Here are the locations of the 'S'.
The hammer mark was too close to be in focus, but the location is evident.
I should also note that the sear & hand also have the 'S' stamped into them.

I just looked at my 60, 63, and 64, all no-dash and none of them have an S stamped on them. Could be that they are all flash hard chromed carbon steel and not stainless.
Could be the factory stamped the stainless parts with an S so they wouldn't be mistaken for "white metal" parts and someone would them try to blue them.

Why the marks on the mainspring, rebound slide, sear & hand then?

I just looked at a bunch of mine with white metal triggers.
Only a very early 63 no dash has the stamp (besides the 66).
Four 617 no dash - no stamps.
One 651 no dash - no stamp.
Three 629 no dash - no stamps.
Four 624 no dash - no stamps.
Four 631 no dash - no stamps.

Thanks, Nygma, those pictures are exactly what I wanted to see. Too bad there is not a real easy way to tell the difference between stainless and the flash chromed hardened steel.

Would be interesting if the "s" was stamped on the parts for only a certain number of years.

If IRC the first model 66 was suppose to me 100 percent stainless including the sights. Next the rear sight was changed back to steel and then the hammer and trigger followed. It would be interesting to see what periods these changes developed. I don't recall anything about the other models.

My big suprise here was finding the 'S' on the back of the trigger on a 1979(ish) model 63. I've never heard of S&W using stainless lockwork parts on this model. I opened the gun up & also found the S on the hammer & rebound slide also.
I learned something today.
