I was browsing at a LGS and came acrossa new 17 masterpiece that was pretty nice. Despite the lock (which does not bother me one way or the other) it seemed well made and finished. My question for those who have had a chance to compare is how does the current production hold up to previous runs?

It is easy to be tempted by a brand new gun but, believe me, you will never regret buying an older Model 17. I have a Model 17-3 that my brother bought new back in the 70s and in a side by side comparison with the new Model 17, well, there is no comparison.
Absolutely no comparison. I've not owned the "Classic" M17 but have owned the M27. From the cheezy grips/stocks to the black finish there's just no comparison.
I do own a fair number of K-22's/M17's and there's no greater joy than shooting them all.
Plus, there's a TON of the old models out there for sale - from the pristine boxed versions for $1500+ to the shooter grades for $500-$600 all day long.

Another vote for a vintage 17. Also, take a look at the 18.
I prefer the older Model 17's and 18's. They were just made better in my way of thinking.The appearance of the older guns from the blueing to the grips to the lock works, there is just no doubt they have the edge over S&W's Classics. I have a friend that bought the S&W Model 27 in the Classic line and kept it a couple of years and then sold it.
I have 2 17's, 1 18 and 1 48. All pre - lock. The new 48 I purchased had the lock and the trigger was horrible. Sold it right away. Look for a pre - lock gun and You will be much happier.

Find someone who has actually done some formal accuracy testing of a new model. I haven't bought a gun in years, but did buy a new 17 over forty years ago. It shoots well, but a new one might do better, I don't know. Not one of the lock moaners has mentioned accuracy.
Well thanks all for the input. Very valuable. I would say I am looking for a shooter grade not something to baby or keep in the safe. Box and papers are not important. I have never purchased a gun on line or from another seller where I cannot put my mitts on it first. I find a lot of variation in quality and function on newer guns...not just Smiths. How reliable are seller forums and gun roker? Any other ideas.

I'm a nut about the 17,&18's and have had the new 17-9 . Lock didn't bother me either. The new model shot just as good as my older guns . The new model is drilled and tapped under the rear sight for mounting an optic. I install 14# rebound springs in everyone to help with the triggers and you can go further if you want. Jerry Miculek has a you tube video on it, but really isn't needed.Which ever you get you'll find they all use the same accessories, and they really don't lose value . Good luck with your choice as either way you will be happy with it and it's accuracy!
Do the new 17s coming with grooved or smooth triggers?

Interesting because I was somewhat impressed with the new 17 at the store, much moreso than the 29 classic I had previoisly seen. On the other hand my 27-2 is by far the finest Smith I have ever owned.

A new one would be OK iffen it did NOT have that boat anchor lug under the barrel.

I don't understand isn't the lug under the 617 with a very short run of blued lugged
17-6 - 17-8. The 17- 9 has no lug?
I have several K22s & M17s. I have had new models in last couple years but you could call them transient because they ain't staying. I would not buy one, just get them on trades. Comparing to old models is apples and oranges, just as the 617 series.
I still have my 1st M17 which I got NIB on a trade back in '64. Shot literally thousand of rounds, carried many miles and went through several holsters.
Wouldn't trade it for two new ones. It doesn't look mint but has carry wear but still tight & timed.

I have had several K22's, and Mod 17's over the years. Also a 617-6 (with lock) 10 shot. While all the 17's, 17-2-3-4 are outstanding smooth shooters, I won't downgrade my 617-6. My practice targets are 1/2" green dots usually shot at 10-12 yards.
