Which .22 ??

Browning Challenger III is my go to .22 with a Buckmark close behind. You won't go wrong with either one.
The Buckmark is the best bang for the buck, IMO. Out of the box trigger is the advantage. I did have a Sig Hamm... trailside (now the x-esse?) and it was a great gun for the price, but I think the prices have gone up quite a bit since I had mine. I wish I hadn't of sold it.

I really like my Buckmark Camper. Easy to take down, very accurate and priced right.

To sorta close the thread....I hiked down to my LGS and tried on a couple of the suggestions. Okay, I wanted to buy 'em all.

But after thinking about it I've decided to get the Sig conversion for my 226. I've had some trigger work done on it, lightened a few springs, put G10s on the handle, and had a 20% discount sitting unused.

None of the triggers on the pure .22s was really any better than my 226, I appreciate those who suggested training with one of my main pistols is a good idea, and it was less than buying a new gun. Plus I'll let my wife try the 422...it might be just the thing for her.

Thanks to all who shared their expertise and experience....now I just gotta wait for the postman.

(Oh, and I really did like a couple of those .22s he had in the case....now going to look through the safe to see what I can unload and get one. There's and FEG P9R I don't shoot any more that just might be looking for a new home.)

One caveat with conversions, they like good ammo like CCI Mini Mags and most other high velocity mid priced ammo. I had a Sig conversion for my 220. Very accurate, but very picky about its diet.

Good luck and enjoy.

I just sold my S & W 41. It was a dream and supper accurate but a bit finicky. I have a Colt Woodsman possibly up for sale on another forum but I was handling it last weekend and if it shoots as good as I remember, I'm gonna be keeping it and maybe getting rid of my Mark II instead.

The newer 22s just don't compare!

But a Colt is likely out of your price range. High Standards are great, also.

My CZ Kadet has eaten anything I've fired through it. Only issue is the cost of the mags.

To the OP, I didn't see that as an option (my fault, probably didn't read you post carefully enough), otherwise I would have recommended it.

I have a Kimber conversion for the 45, that shoots CCI Green Tag just fine, and an Advantage Arms conversion for a Glock 19 that the instruction book says works best with CCI Mini-Mags. I don't think either one gives the accuracy or the handling of my 60 year old Hi Standard Supermatic S-101.
