The -4 is the strongest but the no dash is the rarest being only made for 1 year and it will always hold it's value better.

Just a thought

They're all great but they've gotta be P&R to really get my attention. They all have their features but there is nothing like an older S&W......

You are right about that and that's why the 629 no dash is sold for a large premium. The 629 classic in 5 inch is a great revolver because it's a 5 inch N frame but the term "Classic" is just a S&W Marketing Term because it's neither pinned nor recessed.

Yep.... I'm familiar with the old and the new, fyimo.

Own many models of both and like them all. For shooters I've found the current S&W lifetime warranty is an unbeatable consideration for someone thinking about a new gun. That's the reason for the 629-6 picture... didn't have a 4" handy to submit...;)

Maybe this "Classic" 4" 29 picture is more worthy of this thread....:)

I only shoot light to medium range loads so the 629(no dash) is perfect for my needs ( & wants) ! There is something about the Pinned barrel and Recessed cylinder that is very appealing in the 4" !

It has nothing to do with worthy trust me as I wasn't knocking your choice of the S&W Model 29 Classic 5 inch or 4 inch but just S&W marketing trying to make it look like you were buying the same thing as the original 5 inch model 29 which actually only existed in incredibly small numbers and the new ones weren't P&R. At least Winchester when they brought out the Model 70 classic rifle actually put in the claw extractor dropped in 1964 that created such a stir with their loyal followers.

I really didn't take your post as a "knock" at all, fyimo.:)

I understood where you were coming from and I agree with you about the "Classic" issue..

The discussion is about an opinion on "what is the best 29" and I am familiar with both. The picture of the 629-6 is my current 44 Mag shooter and I've found it to be an excellent firearm, even with their mim's, IL, and everything. I own several N, L, and X frames with those features and have had no problems with any of them.

My heart lies with the P&R and earlier guns, just like it does with you and GLL (love those grips on GLL's 629, btw)

Always enjoy reading both you and GLL's posts... you guys have excellent collections and really know your stuff....:)

My personal favorites are the dash3 to dash 5's these are equally strong and I actually prefer the frame mounted firing pin. The MIM are no concern to me at all but I dont like the IL. Skeeter once stated that if he made his own custom gun it would be with the frame mounted firing pin, he thought it was a superior design.

Dick:

You have good taste in 629's ! ;)

I own a 629-1 6", and it's an excellent shooting revolver. However it's exterior fit and polish seems slightly lesser than other S&W revolvers I own of older and newer vintage.

Works as good as any of the others. Just appears to me the company was putting less time into the guns grips and exterior.

bizloancoach,

I believe you'll find a whole different meaning of the word "best" in this section of the forum rather than what is seen as "best" in the "P&R" section.

You're looking for a strong shooter. The strengthening features of the endurance package and the lack of some features like the IL make the dash 4 a very desirable 629 to many. I certainly wouldn't overlook the dash 5 and 6 either if the price is right.... Mine have been dependable and accurate shooters...:)

I am quite surprised nobody mentioned 629 Classic DX. I never heard of 4˝ one, but they were available with 5˝, 6˝ and 8-3/8˝ barrels. See more here http://www.americanrifleman.org/blogs/S-W-DX-Series/ . They are the best revolvers S&W ever produced. Look for very nice one and expect to pay bit more, but boy, I will grab one in a heartbeat, like this one S&W M 629 CLASSIC DX MINTY Smith & Wesson Revolvers > Model 629 for sale, gun classifieds or gun auction from D L SHOOTING SUPL. Buy or bid on this S&W M 629 CLASSIC DX MINTY in the category Smith & Wesson Revolvers > Model 629 on GunsAmerica.

NOTE: These revolvers are with ˝Endurance Package˝, but I would stay away from too many top loads, especially with with heavy bullets. Too nice guns to be wrecked. If you want top loads in 44, get Redhawk, Super Redhawk, BFR or FA.
