Best 629 dash model

I had this on my table this past weekend.
629-2 E.
Asked numerous times what the E stood for.
Tried to explain the best I could.

Which left the bulk of them staring at me like a hoot owl.

I agree that the -3 and -4 were the best, the pinned and recessed guns look nice, and the only early guns to have were the Lew Horton -1 3” guns. I have had several of each, but down to my last Horton gun now.

I had early 629's and they got loose. During a stocking dealer event a smith tech stretched a cylinder part and replaced a few and they were back to 100%, and I later sold them.

Much later I got a -4 and -5 just to avoid issues.

I took my 4" no dash to the gunshow yesterday, in the presentation case with literature and tools. All the dealers wanted it but $1,100. was their best offer, I want $1,200 so back home and in the safe it went.

The only 629 I would buy at this stage of the game is a square-butt 629-4. There doesn't seem to be a lot of those out in circulation, but they’re out there, and they combined the desirable features that I happen to prefer. 629-3s are more practical for me since they handle the same size bullets that my older 29s use.

As a general rule, I have no use for short-barrel and/or round-butt N-frames.

They are all good guns if they are treated correctly.

I have a 629-3 classic 5" I bought new. It had tight cylinder throats (.428) and didn't shoot well with cast bullets. I had the throats opened to .4305 and it shoots great now. It has the chrome hammer and trigger.

I only have a 629-6, which I love and is very accurate. I believe that was written in the first reply. I’m far from a competitive shooter, and that gun can hurt if you let it. I have a 6” but I could only find wood stocks to save my middle finger from the trigger guard. But with magnums or specials it shoots where I want it to, inside 25yards, but heh…

I had 3 different square butt 629-4 guns. A 4”, 6”, and an 8 3/8” model. All three were excellent shooters. My old hands will just not stand the recoil anymore. My 1911 45’s will be next. It sucks to get old.
