I'm pretty positive it was the old school box like this:

But I've come across someone selling one with THIS as the original box:

Is this kosher?

Suspicious. The 63 no dash was produced from 1977 to 1981. The hinged box was used from 1983 to 1997. With S&W, the dates are not written in stone so they could have shipped an old stock pistol in a new style box. The SN in the photo is high which may support this theory. What bothers me is the absence of the "M" prefix on the serial number label. Does the SN on the pistol match the box number?

I have a 63 no dash with serial # M10761X that came with the
kind of blue, non hinged box as shown in the first picture of
the first thread. The box is numbered to the gun.

Hope this helps.

I had one of these that was stolen from my apartment in the 80s, and I've never recovered. Boy that photo brings back memories! Anyway, I've never seen a 63 no-dash that came with the newer box. It's an astounding gun, and back in the late 70s and early 80s you had to either know somebody or get on a long waiting list to get one.

If someone sold you that gun as the original with that box, I think a renegotiation is in order (if you paid a premium price). I'm only glad the crooks that got my gun didn't get the original wood grips.
