Which Caliber for Which Fish?

I read this article about the military developing underwater bullets. I'm thinking a civilian market can't be far behind. Potentially underwater hunting.

My question is is which caliber should I use on which fish? Is a .22 too much for a trout? Is .30-06 too little for a marlin?

Should I only use brass in saltwater and steel in freshwater hunts? What about nickel plated ammo? Are revolvers better underwater than autos and how about lever action vs. bolt action? This could be a whole new genre!

A new Game Warden was checking licenses on a lake here in Wyoming.

He ran across a really friendly feller and was invited to join the old timer in his boat for a little bit.
He climbed in the boat and they went out to the middle of the lake and got all set up.
All of a sudden, the old guy lit a stick of dynamite and dropped it in the water.

After the blast, the Warden sputtered "You can't do that, it's illegal!"

The old timer lit another stick and tossed it to the Warden.

We got a call out that guy was shooting on the water ( Saltwater inlet) When we got there he was (signal 2 drunk ) and bloddy shot his toe off boat was taking on alot of water. He caught a DU I boating, lost a toe, and a federal charge of fishing with firearm. No fish on board.

When I thought my mothers rules were to oppressive at age 16, I ended up in Alaska. Money was tight and my buddy and I ate a lot of fish and snowshoe hares. For a period near Fairbanks fishing and hunting was poor. Cast after cast would get a half dozen grayling follow my lure to shore but no bite. After several minutes of this he said he could get some. A few casts later the grayling were near shore when I saw the barrel on my Ithaca 37 poke past me. In this one case a 12 gauge will get 3 small grayling per shot. Carrying a Colt Woodsman nearly everywhere I have gone for the past 35 years, it has accounted for holes in many things and critters. Once standing on the bank of a large irrigation ditch, trout could be seen several inches below the surface. Two shots accounted for 2 trout. I tried dynamite about a dozen times and never got anything but wet.

In 1962 my uncle came home from the Marines, and taught me to fish with this method. If I can't fish the way my uncle taught me to, I AIN"T GOING!!!

Poachers in this area used mason jars and carbide to blast fish.
A dangerous practice. Glass goes flying as shrapnel. The ultimate
redneck hand gernade. They did this during the depression. The
last poachers I ran into were poaching trout in N Michigan. They
were using a Honda generator with a homemade capacitor pack.

I used to use an ol' .45/70 Sharps with the Lyman 500 gr. government bullet and a duplex charge of smokeless/black powder to "fish" for big carp in the Big Horn River. Penetration was pretty spectacular. It didn't blow 'em up like some might think but it sure made a nice, big hole!
