I am thinking about getting a model 29 and generally I, being old school, prefer a pinned and recessed -2. I have heard that for a shooter the later threaded barrel is better/stronger. Not to get a biased opinion considering the subforum I am on but which dash model do you consider best?

Personally, I like the -2. The finish seems nicer on most I've seen. However I don't ever shoot those "send 'em home to Mama in a box" heavy loads either.

I think if you are going to get one that will be shoot a lot at the range with full house loads I'd get 29-4. Then it would have the endurance package which came in at -3 and the revised yoke retention system added with -4. You still get the case hardened trigger and hammer with the firing pin on it.

Personally, I just bought a 29-2 pinned and recessed shooter grade 95% gun and I plan on shooting it often and I think it will do fine. I do think the -4 is stronger then the -2 though and the -4 is the last revision number before the MIM parts.

My opinion is that if you keep your loads to Industry Standard, and not "Hot" loads, any dash number will shoot many more than you are willing to put through it.

Actually Art, the endurance package started with 29-3E in early '88 and incorporated the hardened yoke to keep endshake to a minimum, followed by the 29-4 in late '88, which had the radiused stud package and self adjusting yoke screw in addition to the hardened yoke. . Late '89 brought the elongated bolt stop notch, slightly larger cylinder stop, extra strength cylinder stop spring and '90 brought in the bolt block, to eliminate the sensation of trigger kick-back
from heavy loads. If anyone wants some good reading on the subject, I have a PDF I can send them.

I would really appreciate that pdf. Please email to the address that pops up when you click on my screen name. Thanks, Mark

Send the PDF to me too so I'll be better informed. I bought a shooter 29-2 from a forum member and Nickel 29-2 6 inch barrel never fired off of Gunbroker. I think I'm set for a while on 29's but the info would be good to know.

Gun4fun,
If its not a bother, would you please send me that as well. I'm a 29 fan and would like to have that info. My email is in my profile.
Thanks again,

PDF's sent. As I said in the e-mails, I have other articles that are even better. Just not in PDF yet, but I'm working on it.

OK-Lets toss in one more variable. I have always liked the six inch barrel in the 357. I know there are a lot of longer barrel fans in the 44 mag club-around eight inches. Which do you prefer-sixish or eightish?

For the 29's, I prefer the 6 1/2 inch barrel. For shooting a lot, I like the 5 inch barrel Classic. It has the balance like a longer barrel, plus it is easy to handle, has all the strength upgrades mentioned and interchangeable front sight. Plus you don't have to worry about wearing out a gun that is increasingly collectable.

Personally I like 5" barreled N frames, but 6" are far more common and are the most practicle all around length.
While this may chap someone, I don't care for the 6.5 " for looks or balance.

Gun 4 Fun,
E-mail sent. Thank you for your generous offer!
