As far as entertainment goes gimme the 300. It was visually cooler, more entertaining. That being said I don't watch these movies for their story or acting. Just visual escapism

For me, I watch for many reasons but, one thing that hurt the newer movie for me was the liberties they purposely took in making reality into fiction. Other than that---it was good. I'm more of a stickler for anything original.

Me, too. But the TV, Cleopatra was a very good production, although aided in places by computerization, as in the Battle of Actium and I think, with the lighthouse at Alexandria. Starred Lenore Varela, from Chile. A long way from Egypt, but she passed as a Greek Egyptian. Timothy Dalton played Caesar. Billy Zane was Antonius. I bought the DVD.

But I also own the version from about 1962 with Taylor and Burton and it is better overall. Rex Harrison was a better Caesar, for sure. And Burton a good Antonius. I think his temperament was closer to the original guy. But I honestly think that Varela was as good as Taylor as Cleopatra. And maybe more like the real person.

Makes me want to see The 300 Spartans. I've seen 300 and I thought it was overly "artistic."

One of my favorite war movies is Zulu, and I reckon The 300 Spartans is in a similar style.

The movie was actually based on a graphic novel (R rated comic book) by Frank Miller. Same guy who did Sin City. So in essence it's a retelling of a retelling.

I saw 300 Spartans on an aero
Plane years ago : not interesting enough to make an effort to see it again.

The older movie was better, IMHO

I wasnt aware of a TV version but--will look for a copy. Timothy Dalton is a good actor, and I wish he would do more porjects. Zane as Antoninus--tha should be good. I havent seen him in anything sibce: Titanic.

Im a big Richard Burton fan. I admit ive seen parts of Cleop/ but never seen the full novie.

300--the scene were Leonidas says "this is Sparta" and kicks the guy in the well, one of the classic guy movie scenes ever. It's right up there when Josey Whales says " are you going to pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?"

JMO

That was a great scene,. The thing that hurt this version for me--was all the mystical stuff not needed--and the Hunchback/traitor. Had they done it more straight? this movie would be better. I thought all the actors in it did a superior job--any deficiencies IMO--is because of the producer.

ANSWER: (c) Neither (a) or (b) above.

Aw c'mon. There are other versions of these movies but ive never seen them. I saw previews for a German one--and and Italian one--but the Italian one was cheaply made in every way so is most likely--an embarassment to watch. The german one looked good.Ill see if i can remember names and pull info up on them later.

same here--too artistic. Also, the reason I mentiioned these--is beause I saw that at WM at least here in my area--have copies of both in their $5.00 DvD bin as of yesterday. I already have a copy of 300 Spartans--but probably should get anothe copy--just in case it wears out. :D

I used to collect FrankMiller stuff back in the 80s and early 90s. He's good but takes things to the extreme too. Ths first stuff i bought of his was a batman mini-series called; Hunt the Dark Knight. The last thing I bought was something he did about The Punisher. His Robocop stuff sucks though.
