Which grips on your N frame?

You may want to consider buying S&W 500 grips for your N frame. They cover the whole grip and absorb more recoil than the original factory grips provided for an N frame..... The frame fit is identical.. Something for everyone with a round butt N frame to consider...

I guess I have average sized hands. I have tried a bunch of different grips for N Frames over the past 45 years. The best for me are the Keith Brown cokes.

Definitely through S&W, probably available through on-line retailers, and yes I believe they are made for S&W by Hogue. They cover and cushion the back strap better than standard N frame grips do. Remember... they're for round butt N frames only.

I say this because I haven't ordered them for myself yet. I've switched my 500 grips to various round butt N frames and found them to be excellent felt recoil reducers on both 41 and 44 Mags.

I'd advise anyone interested to handle an X frame prior to ordering to confirm a comfortable hand size fit. Grips are like shoes... one size doesn't fit all....

The X-Frame Hogue grips will NOT be an exact fit on your N Frame, because the X-Frame grips is basically a K-Frame grip. I bought a set and couldn't get a satisfactory fit on one of my 29s.

Most of my N Frames wear Pachmayr Presentation grips. The rubber in between the frame and your palm really helps with recoil, at least for me. They're cheap, so you can buy a used pair for $10 or so and see if they work for you.

Get the old style without the ugly medallions on the side!

Hmmm. Well, they work for me. I'd like to hear from others who may have tried them and not had them fit. They do on my 629 Classic and my 657. The above post by aterry33 is erronious and misleading. Please see post number 35 on this thread..

I'm looking for better long finger / double action ergonomics, as opposed to recoil control. Recently replaced a set of Hogue rubber Compacts on my 625-6 MG, w/ an old set of Pach Decellerators, as they set my hand back from the back strap a bit.

The ergonomics are better, but IMO, the gripframe fitment is not as good as the Hogue Monogrip.

I've heard that the X frame grips aren't an exact fit for the RB N, but wouldn't mind trying a set - if I could get my hands on 'em.

I like the Hogue grip that comes on the N frames and also have the X frame grip on one of my 629 round butt revolvers. I like it because it moves my hand rearward just a little which helps in positioning the trigger finger.
Most of my revolvers however wear these Herrett's Jordan Trooper stocks which also move the hand position and are great with recoil.

I have fairly long fingers and these grips work great for me.
I do wish the X frame style grip was also made to fit the square butt N frames.

Tip of the hat, Yamalink. My 625-2 was wearing Hogue's when I got it. Thought it might be more comfortable with Pac. Decellerator(covered back strap). Boy was that an error. The Pac. grip feels like I'm gripping a 2x4. Mono Grip is going back on. Might try the Xframe grip next. Some say it will work and some say not. Until I find out, I'll use Mongoose bicyclist fingerless gloves with the Mono's.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result.

Hogues and Pachmayrs grippers (open-back) both work well for me.

All my N-frames wear rubber except an early Model 29 with factory cokes. I've never found a set of N-frame wood stocks that fit me better than the cokes.

These are on my N-Frame 627PC Snubby. They are made for S&W by Altamont under a contract. You can buy them from S&W, but not Altamont. Very comfortable when shooting 357 a lot. Just do not feel the recoil. The back is open. Also have them on my L-Frame 686 in the foreground.

About 35 years ago, I cut down a set of S&W target grips that came with my revolver - cut about 3/16" off the bottom, rounded the edges, cut back the inside to minimum without cutting through completely, cut a small "pinky" groove. This was done cut and feel/shoot, until I was satisfied with the fit and feel. Refinished w/ Tru Oil, they look nice too. Have done this to almost all of them now, and wouldn't change a thing.

Since my guns will go in my coffin with me, I'm not so worried about resale. Don't think I would mess w/ a pair of Cokes, but the P&R vintage target grips are great candidates for a custom tough on these superb guns.

Well folks, after being told the X frame grips wouldn't fit on a round butt N frame I drug out 4 round butt N frames to prove they will.

The following are pictures of the frames of both a 500 and a 629. They were tried on 4 different guns and the result was the same... perfect fit on all!!

Unless there is some odd variation in X frame grips the poster who said they wouldn't fit is dead wrong. They fit all the round butt N frame guns I tried perfectly and tightly so I quit checking them on others.

The assertion he made that these grips are based on K frame size is totally misleading and erroneous to say the least....

If they fit your hand you're going to love them on the heavy recoil guns!!

+1 on Jordan Troopers. Send a tracing of your hane and you will be surprised. They are not as large as you would expect.

Here are my older ones, bought off the popular auction site. They were described wrong but I recognized them from the photos and took a chance. Best grips I ever tried.

I'd double check the part numbers on a 500 and the one you've referenced at S&W that states "Hogue square butt conversion grip." They may be very different. It would seem to me they'd have to be to fit a square butt too.

I know Pachmayr square butt Presentations will fit, though a bit loosely, on a round butt N frame (see the picture of my 629 Classic RB in an earlier post in this thread that has them). The gun has old style Pachmayr SqBs on it and they function OK but certainly not as firmly as the original 629 Hogues or the original 500 grips fit.

Just a "heads up" to be sure people don't purchase what may be the wrong X frame grip item....

Good point. Actually hoping some one offers a used set off of their 500, for say... $25.00 shipped. ;=]

The key phrase in that is 'square butt conversion' which should mean what it appears to say, a conversion to square. The X frame grip is one that converts a round butt profile frame to a square butt profile grip. I like the idea, it gives the gun more choices in grips.
