Which grips were originally on my Model 19-4

My Model 19-4 came to me wearing aftermarket grips. I'd like to find original-style, target grips for it and I've learned that there are two types. I see that there are the grips with the deep relief cut for speedloaders, and the earlier type with the "football" cut. Searching the serial # database on this forum (thank you for that), I see that my revolver was manufactured in 1979. Of those two type grips, which would have been originally installed on my pistol? Thanks for any help.

The speedloader cut appeared on the K frames in 1978. I would think that a 19-4 from 1979 could have had either the football or speedloader cut. Football might be a bit more likely, but either one would be potentially correct. So, which ever one floats your boat should be fine. They would definitely be GA and would not have the diamond.

I have seen football relief target grips with a 1980's date stamp on the inside.
So yeah, transition dates probably employed whatever was left in the parts bins!

As Murphydog stated, the 2-1/2" Model 19-4 had the magna stocks like my nickel version from 1978. As to your 1979 Model 19-4, I also believe it could have had either the extractor relief (football) cutout or speedloader cutout. I much prefer the football cutout, like on my 1973 Model 19-3 (Texas Ranger). I guess that you've got to decide which style you prefer. Good luck!

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like either one could be how it was shipped. One more question, if you don't mind. Concerning the S&W medallion...I see silver and gold ones on grips for sale. Could either of those be correct?

I have a 4" 19-4 in nickel that shipped in 1978. It has the original target stocks which have the speedloader cutout. I also have a 19-4 in 6" blue with the original box from 1979. It also has the speedloader cutout targets. By 1979 I'm certain your gun would have had the speedloader cutout stocks. As to your question about the medallions, I've never seen gold, only silver.

I think the gold ones sometimes observed are just worn/tarnished silver ones. Good find Dave! And Welcome to the Forum!

What do the boxes say in "STOCK"?

I have owned more than a few 19-4s and they all had the speedloader cuts.

Interesting. Most square butt Model 19's (well, after about 47K) had "ST" in stock.
