One of my local gun shops called me today that he has 2 minty 3rd gen S&W 9mm's in stock - a 3913 and a model 39-2.
I can only afford to buy one - which would you guys suggest?
I already have a 908S and a 3913LS.
thanks for your help.

39-2 is 1st gen.

I'd go with the 3913 3rd gen for shooting.

I'd pick the 39-2... Especially since its minty. :) the ergonomics are second to none... One of the finest shooting semi autos ever made. And you can pick up 3913s easier.

I'd split the money you have and put half down on each to hold them! :D

Older mint S&W's are becoming rarer than hen's teeth. Grab all you can....

Ok all opinions aside let's go with facts. Smiths warranty will cover the 3rd gen not a first or second gen. The 39 is more rare but likely to have an alloy frame which has been known to wear down easier . Taking those into account I love older guns but i also don't want to baby something. Flip a coin ....

I'd buy that 39-2 now...if it isn't already gone.
Nice condition 1st gen. pistols are much more difficult to find and are extremely sweet. Look it over thoroughly.
If you maintain them (replace the recoil springs once in awhile!!!) and keep them lubricated properly those alloy framed 1G pistols will last just fine.

Went to the shop yesterday and saw them in person. The 39-2 WAS minty, the 3913 was less so. I'd give in an A-, but it was a good price, and I love the fact that I can mix and match mags and parts if I ever need to. So I added the 3913NL to the family. I have it in pieces cleaning it now - will post photos tonight.
