Have the 40 shield and am pretty happy with it. Thinking of adding a 9 shield. My LGS is trying to talk me into a full size 40 M&P. would be pretty easy to do except it is over budget. But the SD40VE is not and I like it also.

My guess is I am going to get a lot of support for the 9 Shield, after all this is the M&P part of this forum! But I wanted your opinions. SD40VE or 9 Shield, which would you choose?

(FWIW, I am leaning heavily in the direction of the M&P)

You need to purchase the gun YOU want, not what someone else wants.

But I want them both!

Actually thinking of some 3-gun competition. I am being told I will be dissatisfied with the limited round count of the shield.

I have both and like both equally well. But they are for two different purposes. The SD for HD and the Shield for CCW. The triggers on each are quit different. The Shield 9 trigger us probably more like the one on your Shield 40. One advantage to the SD is same ammo = less cost.

FWIW I have the 9mm Shield, a .40 S&W M&P Pro, and an SD40VE. IMO the SD40VE isn't even in the same class as the M&P's. Nice shooting gun, but no comparison to a full size M&P .40.

Since you already have a .40 Shield, my vote is for the full-size M&P .40. Mine is my favorite gun, I put a couple hundred rounds a week through it.. just fun to shoot!

I would agree that the SD40VE etc. that line, is not the M&P line. It's a value line. Nothing against it, it's designed that way.

Obviously a 9mm shield vs a full-size .40 are different monsters. Now this is a situation I am sort of in, as .40 S&W and 9mm are my "two calibers' with .40 being my earlier "main caliber' and now 9mm is taking over.... I have a mid-sized .40 in my G23 but my last two buys were a full-size combat pistol in a SIG P226 MK25 9mm and now a S&W M&P Shield 9mm subcompact ... I am thinking I need a full-size .40 S&W next, and am looking like I am loving my M&P Shield ... so a M&P40 could be my next but.. this is about you not me lol. Go with what feels the best in your head and or heart.\

I went the with the FS M&P .40 then added the Shield and could not be happier .

I have a 9MM Shield, a .40 M & P FS and a .40 SD. The SD trigger is totally different than the M & P. I'll take the M & P all day.

I went with the .40 shield. Then I bought a 9mm barrel for it. Best of both worlds.

For carry, I'd go with the shield. To most people is mich easier to carry 12+ hours a day versus a bigger/heavier gun.

For range use....U simple can't beat a FS.

Curious how you're doing with your Shield conversion - a thread on this forum that comes up on a Google search has a post that says someone here called S&W about the conversion and they were told that their service dept. is crammed to the ceiling with people who put a 9mm bbl in their .40 Shield and it's stuck open/locked back.. and they need to send them into S&W to get them fixed. So while I wanted purposely to go with the 9mm I did in fact at least consider the .40 but decided not to tinker with it too much

I started with a sd40ve. Sold it to get a m&p 40c (I couldn't afford both at time) I then bought a shield 40. Soo much easier to carry all day over the 40c. The sdve was a great gun had no problems with it at all. Great range/bed side gun. But after shooting a m&p I'll never go back!

If you are serious about 3 gun, you want the 5" bbl M&P Pro with FO sights. The shield is not suitable for 3 gun, unless you are just doing it for the aerobic exercise. Suggest you start easy with some club matches in USPSA before buying the 3 comp guns needed for 3 gun matches: bunch of bucks

I've read his previous posts and a few other posts on other forums with people that were fortunate enough to have got a 9mm barrel from S&W and are having no problems with them. It's my opinion that S&W figured out what people were doing and just simply stopped selling them to keep people from doing the conversion. I would love to get a 9mm barrel but good luck finding one.

I've been around this shield .40 to 9mm barrel swap for far too long. Actually I've been around it for a few months longer than anybody. I've personally never had a single problem. And I've never heard anyone on this forum claim a problem with theirs either. In fact I've never heard anyone claim a problem with their conversion.

Mine shoots better now than it ever has. I guess that's because it is well past the break in time. Actually I have over 10k rounds through it. Mostly 9mm but I do run a few mags of .40 SD ammo through it during each range session.
