Hi All!

With my aging eyes, I just can't see the sights on my older M17. I have already have a Weaver no-drill mount, and intend to mount a red dot. Which red dot should I buy?

I have an Ultradot MatchDot on my M41, but I don't want anything this large and heavy on my 17. I would prefer a 3-4 MOA sized dot, and it would ideally cost less than $200 (the cheaper the better, but with a reasonable service life). What recommendations do you guys have?

Thanks!

How about the regular 1" Ultra Dot? I use the 30mm UltraDot's on my various K-frames and the size/weight doesn't really bother me. I'm not a big guy either.

Aimpoint H-1 (or one of it's clones like the Primary Arms) might be something to think about too.

I had a Sightmark 4 reticle reflex mounted on my 617 at one point. Battery life wasn't great but it was only 70 dollars at Gander Mountain. You'll see the same sight sold under the Barska brand and many other labels. I suspect that it's made in Russia because the optical quality is extremely good, it was advertized as having a 2 MOA dot and it actually had a 2 MOA dot that is sharp as a tack.

BTW, if you're not aware of it during the late 70's and 80's the Russian camera industry had a reputation for producing cameras that were train wrecks and equipping them with lenses that many regarded as "bargain Leica lenses".

If you want cheap and good, one of those reflex sights will do the job on a 22, however I wouldn't recomend them for a larger caliber. I'll also point out that having the sight that far above the barrel axis will make it sensitive to distance. Zero the sight at 100 feet and you'll shoot about 3 inches low at 25 feet, zero it for 25 feet and you'll be way high at longer ranges.

Bushnell red dot sights used to be very small and affordable. I sold one a few days ago with a 629 Power Port, it worked fine and was very smal/light. The dot was bigger than you want, but I see there are other models now with a variable dot size (1-10 MOA) Average price is near $90, starting at $65.
I think one of those could last forever on a .22 cal. revolver.

Regards, Alejandro.

Check out the J Point and Burris Fast Fire listed in Midway. Very small and compact. Also, there is a Dr. Dot about the same size, however the prices of all 3 are probably above your stated price.
